Ready-to-wear, made-to-measure and bespoke, side by side.
Ready-to-wear, made-to-measure and bespoke are three ways to buy a boot. Ready-to-wear comes in standard sizes. Made-to-measure builds the pair to your measurements, as Olsen-Stelzer does from foot tracings or a favorite boot's size. Bespoke, in the shoemaker's sense, starts with a last built for each foot and a prototype pair.
This guide measures real boot makers against the shoe-trade definition: Olsen-Stelzer's published process, Allens Custom Boots in El Paso, and Rod Patrick Bootmakers in Fort Worth. For the history of the word itself, read what bespoke means.
What is the difference between bespoke, made-to-measure and ready-to-wear boots?
Ready-to-wear boots are made in standard sizes, made-to-measure boots are built to a customer's measurements, and bespoke boots start with a last created for each of the customer's feet. Wikipedia describes bespoke shoes this way: the feet are measured, a last is made for each foot, and the customer tries a prototype pair in inexpensive leather. Wikipedia's tailoring article describes ready-to-wear as factory made in finished condition and standardized sizes.
The Savile Row Bespoke Association defines made-to-measure as a garment made to a customer's individual requirements, to some extent, but not necessarily by hand.
| Point | Ready-to-wear | Made-to-measure | Bespoke |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Standard sizes (Wikipedia) | Foot tracings and measurements, or the size, width and brand of a favorite fitting boot (Olsen-Stelzer) | Feet measured, a last created for each foot (Wikipedia, Bespoke shoes) |
| Fitting step | Rod Patrick (stocked boots): a complimentary fitting, over 500 sizes and a sizing passport; its page also offers a custom build | Allens: 7-point tracing, pressure imprint and foam mold | Prototype pair tried in inexpensive leather (Wikipedia, Bespoke shoes) |
| Order route | Boots already listed in the current catalog (house custom guide) | Order form, then an exact price and estimated delivery date from Olsen-Stelzer | After the final lasts exist, reorder without more measurements and fittings (Wikipedia) |
| Published timing | See each product page | Olsen-Stelzer: 8 to 12 weeks (history page) or 2 to 3 months in most cases (homepage); reference figures, read 2 October 2026 | No boot-specific figure in the sources read |
| Published price | See each product page | Olsen-Stelzer starting at $1,500 for cowhide, shoulder, goat or buffalo (reference figure, read 2 October 2026) | No boot-specific figure in the sources read |
Is Olsen-Stelzer bespoke or made-to-measure?
Olsen-Stelzer calls its boots made-to-measure, and its published pages describe measuring by tracing or by a favorite boot's size. Those pages say nothing about a last built for each customer or a prototype pair, so they describe made-to-measure, not the shoemaker's bespoke. Its history page says the company has been supplying made-to-measure boots for decades, and its homepage says all of its boots are handmade in the State of Texas by master bootmakers.
The measuring page asks for a foot tracing on paper, your shoe and boot size, and notes on injuries, bunions, corns or problem areas. You can also send a well-fitting boot or use a Brannock device. The order form then asks for the leather, stitching, toe and heel, size and width.
Ask Olsen-Stelzer directly if a last or a prototype pair matters to you. The custom cowboy boots guide covers the order form, the full price ladder and the deposit.
How do other Texas boot makers measure for fit?
Texas boot makers describe fit very differently from one another. Allens Custom Boots heads its custom page "HANDMADE, MADE-TO-MEASURE" and describes a full tracing, measurements at 7 different points on each foot and calf, a pressure imprint and a foam mold.
Rod Patrick Bootmakers measures over 20 parts of the foot, calf and ankle in a complimentary fitting. Its Custom Boot Fitting page offers over 500 sizes and says customers can leave with a personalized sizing passport for future boot purchases. The page also says, "Prefer something custom? We'll start building it right away."
Because makers describe fit in such different ways, the process tells you more than the label does.
Should you pick bespoke, made-to-measure or ready-to-wear boots?
Pick ready-to-wear when a listed boot fits and you want it soon. Pick made-to-measure when standard sizes miss your foot or you want to specify the leather, toe and heel. Pick bespoke when a maker confirms it builds a last for each foot and fits a prototype pair.
Many house boot pages carry a fit note. The Hevias Heritage Boot in calfskin says it fits true to size and is handcrafted in León, Mexico. The Alvies Lamar page describes Alvies' Fast Break-In Fit. The boot fit guide shows how to check a pair.
What should you ask a maker before you order?
Ask what is measured, whether a last is built for you, whether a prototype pair comes first, how the deposit works and when delivery is expected. Those five answers show where a maker sits on the scale.
- What do you measure, and how: tracing, calipers, a foam mold, or a favorite boot's size?
- Do you build a last from my feet, or fit me to an existing one?
- Do I try a prototype pair before the final leather is cut?
- What is the deposit, and what part comes back if I cancel? Olsen-Stelzer publishes a 50% non-refundable deposit (read 2 October 2026).
- What is the estimated delivery date for my exact configuration?
Quick answers
Is bespoke worth it over made-to-measure?
For garments, Wikipedia says that all else equal, made-to-measure costs more than ready-to-wear but less than bespoke. For boots, none of the sources read gives a bespoke price, so compare written quotes against the questions above.
Is custom the same as made-to-measure?
Often. Wikipedia says "Custom made" most often refers to made-to-measure. Olsen-Stelzer and Allens both use "custom" and "made-to-measure" together.
Can you send a boot that already fits?
Olsen-Stelzer says to feel free to send a well-fitting boot, and its master bootmaker will take the size, width and brand of your favorite boot as sizing specs.
Why is everyone calling things bespoke now?
The word spread from tailoring into general marketing. The bespoke meaning guide sets out the sources, including a UK ruling on the term.
Bottom line
Ready-to-wear is the fastest route, made-to-measure fits the pair to your measurements, and bespoke in the shoemaker's sense starts with a last and a prototype pair. Boot makers use "made-to-measure" for processes ranging from a favorite boot's size to a foam mold, so compare the process rather than the label.
