How to Wear Cowboy Boots With a Suit

Polished leather and a clean trouser line are what make boots work with a suit.

Cowboy boots work with a suit when the boot is built like a dress boot: a sleek toe, smooth or exotic leather, a clean welt, and a real shine. The trouser should fall over the shaft so only the foot shows. Get those two things right and the boots look like a choice you made, not a costume you put on.

Can you wear cowboy boots with a suit?

Yes. In Texas it has been ordinary for generations, at weddings, in courtrooms, at church and in boardrooms. The rule is not "boots or no boots." The rule is that the boot has to match the formality of the suit. A dress boot under a good suit reads as polished. A scuffed work boot under the same suit reads as a mistake.

The trick is that almost nobody sees the shaft of a cowboy boot under a suit. What people see is the toe, the vamp and a little of the heel. So judge a boot for a suit by the part that shows.

Which cowboy boots look best with a suit?

A narrower, cleaner toe and smooth leather look best. A snip or a classic toe keeps the line of the leg long, the way a dress shoe does. A wide square toe or a roper reads more casual. Alvies' own copy for The Manchaca says the roper, with its short heel and rounded toe, was made for rodeo cattle ropers who had to jump off their horses and run, and that it is designed to work just as well for businessmen. That is a great boot. It is not the dressiest one.

Leather matters as much as shape. Smooth calf or cowhide, polished, is the safe choice. An exotic like lizard or python raises the formality and the attention at the same time. Rough-out and heavily distressed leather belong with denim, not wool.

How should suit trousers sit over cowboy boots?

Over the boot, never tucked in. The hem should fall over the shaft and rest on the top of the foot with a slight break, so the trouser drapes cleanly and the boot shows only below it. Tucking suit trousers into boots is a working look, and it ruins the line of the suit.

Because a boot shaft is wider than an ankle, a tailor may need to leave a little more room at the hem than they would for a dress shoe. Wear the boots to the fitting. That one step fixes most of what goes wrong.

What color boots go with which suit?

Treat boots the way you would treat dress shoes. Darker suits take darker boots, and brown gives you more range than black.

Suit color Boot color that works Why
Navy Medium to dark brown, burgundy Brown and navy is the classic dress pairing
Charcoal Black or dark brown Keeps the outfit sharp and low-contrast
Mid grey Brown or black Grey is the easiest suit color to pair
Black Black only Brown under black reads unfinished
Tan or light grey Tan, cognac, medium brown Lighter suits want lighter leather

Should your belt match your boots?

Match the color family and the finish, not the exact shade. Brown boots take a brown belt, black boots a black belt, and polished boots a smooth belt. An exotic boot does not need an exotic belt. A plain leather belt in the same color lets the boot be the one statement.

Which house boots work with a suit?

These are in stock on bespokewestern.com, and every Alvies boot is Goodyear welted, per Alvies.

  • The Comal. Alvies calls it a boot with "a quarter-inch snip toe." A snip is the narrowest of the common toe shapes, which makes The Comal the natural suit boot.
  • The Lamar. A premium cowhide boot modeled on the pair Alvie's grandfather wore, which had a classic toe and a cowboy heel. Polished, it goes anywhere a brown dress shoe goes.
  • The Congress. Teju lizard. Alvies' own copy lists a wedding and a job interview among the places to wear it. Lizard is the quietest exotic, so it dresses up without shouting.
  • The 6th Street. Python. A statement boot. Wear it with a plain suit and let it do the talking.

If you want the Western feel without a tall shaft, the Hevias Diplomat is a bourbon leather Chelsea boot. It sits between a dress boot and a cowboy boot, and our roper, cowboy boot and Western Chelsea guide explains the difference.

Is an exotic cowboy boot too much with a suit?

Not if the rest of the outfit is quiet. A lizard or python boot is the most noticeable thing you are wearing, so pair it with a solid suit, a plain shirt and a simple tie. Save the patterned jacket for the day you wear calf. Our exotic boot decision guide covers how each skin reads.

What should you avoid?

Avoid these five things. Each one pulls a boot away from the suit.

  • A scuffed or unpolished boot. Shine the boots the night before, the same as dress shoes.
  • Trousers tucked into the shaft.
  • A work sole or rubber lug under a dress suit.
  • A very wide square toe with a narrow, close-cut suit.
  • Brown boots with a black suit.

What about a bolo tie, or boots at a wedding?

Both follow the same logic: match the formality. A bolo tie can stand in for a necktie with a suit and boots. Our bolo tie guide covers height and collar. For a wedding, our wedding boots guide covers what grooms and guests wear.
