Python Boots: Are They Legal, Real, and Worth It?

Python: a regulated skin with a raised, natural scale.

Python boots are cut from python skin, and of the five heavily exploited Southeast Asian python species, a 2017 PLOS One study calls the reticulated python the most economically important. Python is a CITES Appendix II species, apart from the Indian python on Appendix I, and Appendix II allows commercial trade through a permitting process. California bans selling python products. This guide covers the law, sourcing, spotting a print, and the two house pairs.

Are python boots legal?

It depends on where you are. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says importing an Appendix II specimen into the United States does not require an import permit but does require an export permit issued by the country of export, and California Penal Code section 653o makes it unlawful to import python products for commercial purposes, possess them with intent to sell, or sell them in the state. Other states may have their own rules, so check your state's wildlife law before you order.

The California statute targets commerce, meaning import for commercial purposes, possession with intent to sell, and sale. For travelers, the federal fact sheet says a CITES document is not required for a legally acquired specimen worn as clothing when all of its listed conditions are met, and one condition is that no Appendix-I specimen is included, so read them before you cross a border in python.

Section 653o also names the Teju lizard, in a separate subdivision, covered in our teju lizard boots guide.

Where does python boot skin come from, and how much is traded?

In Southeast Asia, reticulated pythons are primarily harvested from the wild for their skins, and a CITES-commissioned study cited in the paper identified Indonesia as the primary country supplying their skins to the global market. A 2017 study in PLOS One reports approximately 350,000 skins legally exported each year for the high-end fashion market alone.

The same study says the international and commercial trade in python skins can be traced back to between 1910 and the 1920s. Wikipedia describes the animal as the world's longest snake and says that in several countries in its range it is hunted for its skin.

The Rebel names reticulated python in its product title, and The 6th Street page names only python.

How can you tell real python from a printed pattern?

The bootmaker Tony Mora says genuine python scales are three-dimensional and slightly raised at the edges, while imitation scales are usually flat, printed or embossed.

Tony Mora adds that every genuine skin carries its own pattern, so a pattern that is too uniform or repetitive is a sign it could be artificial. The rest of the buyer's checklist, including cut and paperwork, lives in our snakeskin cowboy boots guide.

Are python boots durable?

Sellers say python wears for years with care, though they disagree on how delicate it is. Country View Western, a North Carolina retailer, says python can withstand wear and tear for years with plenty of care and requires more maintenance than other leathers.

The same retailer's later post calls python's large scales delicate, saying they can peel or curl over time unless cared for properly. Tony Mora takes the other side, calling python far from a fragile material and incredibly flexible. Both views are seller opinions, and none of the sources cited here publishes a wear test.

The Rebel's page lists a leather lining and durable construction, and its fit note reads structured at first, then softens with wear. For how python sits beside ostrich and caiman, read the exotic boot decision guide.

How do makers say to clean python and fix a lifted scale?

Alvies says to wipe in the direction of the scales with a slightly dampened soft cotton cloth, and Tony Mora says to press a lifted scale back down with a drop of conditioner. Alvies' own care post warns that soap or too much water dries out the scales and makes them curl backwards.

Alvies adds a soft sable brush for dust beneath the scales and a leather conditioner to keep the skin supple. It names UV light as the mortal enemy of python leather and says to keep the boots in a cool, dark place with air around them, not sealed in plastic.

Tony Mora calls some tilt in the scales perfectly normal as you walk. Conditioning basics sit in our conditioning guide.

Which python boots does the house sell?

Two: The Rebel from Hevias and The 6th Street from Alvies. Both are python, and they differ in how much their pages say about the skin.

Boot Line What the page says about the skin Colors Widths
The Rebel Hevias Reticulated python in the title; "authentic python upper"; handcrafted in León, Mexico Midnight Sizes listed; width option not offered
The 6th Street Alvies Python; species not named Vintage Limo Black, Treasure Ship Brown D and EE

Pick The Rebel if you want the species named up front. Pick The 6th Street if you want a choice of two colors and a D or EE width. Check each product page for the sizes in stock.

Quick answers

What is a reticulated python?

It is a python species native to South and Southeast Asia, and Wikipedia calls it the world's longest snake. It is the species named in The Rebel's title.

Do python boots soften with wear?

The Rebel's page says they are structured at first, then soften with wear. Tony Mora describes python as flexible and says it molds to the foot.

Do python boots protect against snakebite?

Nothing cited here says they do. The Rebel's page claims no protection, and the maker pages cited here publish no fang-resistance rating for python boots. Buy gear made for that job if protection matters to you.

Should python be my first exotic pair?

That depends on how you wear boots. The ostrich boots guide and the exotic boot decision guide set the options side by side.

Bottom line

Python boots use a regulated material, with reticulated python primarily wild-harvested, traded under CITES permits and barred from sale in California. Ask for the species, feel for raised scales, and care for the skin with the scales. The Rebel and The 6th Street are the two house pairs.
