Chelsea boots on Main Street.
Start with the Thursday Cavalier, the lowest-priced Chelsea boot in our file whose page states a Goodyear welt, at $199. Thursday lists a leather outsole with TPU studs, and its page shows 4.9 from 3,781 reviews. Seven other picks cover wholecut, width, origin and build.
We compared 17 Chelsea boots from 12 brands. Prices checked October 11, 2026 (Meermin, Grant Stone and R.M. Williams: October 12, 2026; our Diplomat: October 16, 2026). The page covers men's laceless ankle boots. In the tables, Not stated marks a point where the maker's page shows no such line in the text we saved or read.
I think fit comes first, and once a boot fits and has settled in, it is extremely comfortable, like a good baseball glove. Boots in general? See best boots for men. Styling? Read how to wear Chelsea boots. Or shop our Diplomat.

Lowest-priced stated Goodyear welt: Thursday Cavalier
The Cavalier is a Chelsea in hand-finished full-grain leather with a Goodyear welt, a glove-leather lining and a leather outsole with TPU studs, at $199.
It is the lowest-priced of the nine Chelsea boots in our file whose pages state a Goodyear welt, eight for the boot itself and the Chelsea 5 at brand level, ahead of the Meermin 101050 at $265.
Six saved lines name the Cavalier, all from reviewers: four positive and two mixed. A reviewer at BootSpy wrote, "even with 20+ pairs of shoes in my closet, it's very often my go-to."
Watch out: A Stridewise reviewer wrote that the leather sole has "a layer of rubber underneath it". The reviewer also wrote, "Not every leather gets a wide-width option". The product page shows no width option, and Thursday's FAQ lists men's footwear in its Standard width unless noted. Skip it if you need a width option on the product page or a stated country of origin.
Lowest-priced stated wholecut: Meermin 101050
The 101050 is a wholecut Chelsea in black boxcalf, Goodyear welted, on the Hiro last, with a full-grain calf lining and a double studded rubber outsole, at $265.
It is the lowest-priced of the two Chelsea boots in our file whose pages say wholecut, ahead of the Thursday Journeyman at $289. Meermin's page describes a wholecut pattern made from a single piece of leather.
Of 13 saved Meermin Chelsea lines, six review the wholecut line and seven the brand. Stridewise's reviewer wrote that Meermin "does whole cut Chelseas for a really good price, using really good leathers".
Watch out: Sizing is UK. A Stridewise reviewer wrote, "Not great for guys with wide feet". Skip it if you need a stated origin, resole route or rating.
Stated wholecut with a rating: Thursday Journeyman
The Journeyman is a Chelsea with a 270-degree Goodyear welt, a wholecut upper in one piece of hand-finished full-grain leather and a Knight anti-slip rubber outsole, at $289.
It is the only one of the two stated wholecut Chelsea boots whose page shows a rating: 4.9 from 117 reviews.
Two saved lines name the Journeyman, both on r/Boots; one is a prediction, not an owner report. The owner had it resoled and wrote that "the construction seems really solid", though the heel was taller than they preferred.
Skip it if you need a width option on the product page or a stated origin.
Narrow width listed: R.M. Williams Comfort Craftsman
The Comfort Craftsman is a Goodyear-welted Chelsea in yearling leather crafted from one piece of leather, with a comfort rubber sole, made in Australia, at $589.
It is the only Chelsea in our file whose page lists a Narrow width, and the only one made in Australia.
GQ named R.M. Williams' Heritage Craftsman its best overall Chelsea, a different boot from this Comfort Craftsman. Stitchdown's 2021 guide calls the Craftsman line "Goodyear welted wholecut". This boot's page says "one piece of leather", so we count it outside the two wholecut boots.
An owner on r/malefashionadvice wrote of it, "Most comfortable footwear I own." A commenter on r/Boots, passing on a YouTube review, wrote of the brand, "they cheap out on materials in that price range. i would avoid those".
Watch out: Sizing is AU/UK, and exchanges for online purchases happen in store only. Skip it if you want a rating on the maker's page.
Made in the USA, with an EE width: Red Wing Classic Chelsea
The Classic Chelsea has a Goodyear leather welt, a Traction Tred outsole, full-grain oiled leather and the 8 last, made in the USA, in D and EE widths, at $299.99.
It is the only Chelsea in our file whose page says that boot is made in the USA, and one of two that list an EE width, with Grant Stone.
Red Wing's page shows 3.9 from 90 reviews. A Stridewise reviewer wrote that Red Wing has "the chunkier Classic Chelsea for more of a work boot vibe".
Skip it if you want a sleeker boot than the one that reviewer calls chunkier.
Horween Chromexcel upper: Grant Stone Chelsea Boot
The Chelsea Boot in black Chromexcel is a Goodyear-welted Chelsea in Chromexcel tanned by Horween, with a full-grain kip lining and a micro stud rubber outsole, in D (Standard) and EE (Extra Wide) widths, at $435.
It is the only Chelsea in our file whose page names Chromexcel. Grant Stone says every pair is crafted in its factory on Xiamen Island, China.
An owner on r/malefashionadvice, no model named, wrote, "Grant Stone is fine- just not much better than my J Crew model for like 2x the price."
Watch out: Refunds carry a $15 restocking fee with the prepaid label, and the UK last runs a half-size large. Skip it if you want a boot made outside China.
Blundstone with a stated welt: Heritage #156
The Heritage #156 is a Goodyear-welted Chelsea in premium full-grain leather, with a leather outsole and rubber tread and a leather and textile lining, at $394.95.
It is the only one of the three Blundstone Chelsea boots in our file whose page states a Goodyear welt; the #585 and #1306 list TPU outsoles.
Nine saved Blundstone Chelsea lines come from Reddit owners and commenters, all about Blundstones in general. We set aside a tenth line, from a post that discloses an affiliate commission. One owner on r/Boots wrote of Blundstones, not the #156, "The soles last about a year or so with regular wear." The #156 page shows 5.0 from 2 reviews.
Skip it if you need a stated origin or width.
Made in León, Mexico: Hevias The Diplomat (ours)
The Diplomat is a bourbon calfskin Chelsea, Goodyear welted, with a leather lining, handcrafted in León, Mexico, in sizes 8 to 13. It costs $295.
It is the only Chelsea in our file whose page says that boot is handcrafted in León, Mexico. Thursday's FAQ lists León among four factory cities without naming one per style.
Hevias's page says the Diplomat is Goodyear welted and built to be resoled. Our page leaves the outsole, width, rating and warranty blank, and our files hold zero owner lines for Hevias styles.
At full price, our refund policy gives you 30 days from delivery to exchange for full credit or "send them back for a full refund to your original payment method".
George's take: I call Hevias modern Western, and its range includes Chelsea boots.
Watch out: Sizes run 8 to 13 only, with 12.5 missing. Skip it if you need a stated outsole, width or rating, or a size outside 8 to 13. For the lowest stated-welt price, see the Cavalier.
See The Diplomat and Hevias.
Which other Chelsea boots are in our file?
- Beckett Simonon Bolton: $279, with 5.0 from 597 reviews and a D width. Beckett Simonon's page says "Blake stitching ensures the shoes are sturdy and resoleable with minimal break-in". GQ also calls it Blake stitched.
- The Beckett Simonon Astor is the only Chelsea in our file whose page mentions double welt detailing. It costs $279 and its page shows 5.0 from 15 reviews, a D width and a 1-year warranty.
- The Crockett & Jones Chelsea 5 is the highest-priced of the 17 at $940, in an E fitting, with Goodyear welting stated at brand level. Its page offers a 28-day return policy on unworn goods and shows no origin for the boot.
- Blundstone Classics #585: $219.95, with a TPU outsole, a leather lining and 4.78 from 611 reviews (its reviews block reads 613).
- Taft The Murphy: $365, handmade in Italy, with a leather outsole, a D width and 5.0 from one review.
- Johnston & Murphy Upton: the lowest-priced of the 17 at $129.99 now, $179 regular, with a TRUFOAM sole and 4.2 from 224 reviews beside its title (4.7 in its reviews block).
The tables also list the G.H. Bass Creswell (no rating), the Blundstone Dress #1306 (4.76 from 68 reviews) and the Beckett Simonon Silva (4.8 from 8); their pages are silent on construction.
How we picked
I think construction is the value of a boot: a well-built pair, looked after, lasts a lifetime. Our Diplomat states a Goodyear welt and a resole claim, and leaves its outsole, width, rating and warranty blank.
The file holds 17 Chelsea boots from 12 brands, saved or read from the makers' own pages on October 11 and 12, 2026. It also holds 73 Chelsea lines from Reddit and from reviewers at GQ, Stridewise, Stitchdown and BootSpy, and we label each line we quote.
Bespoke Western makes and sells Alvies, Hevias and Olsen-Stelzer boots, and one of the 17 Chelsea boots in the tables is ours: the Diplomat. Chelsea boots from Astorflex, Carmina, Redback, Morjas and Saint Laurent appear in the Stridewise and GQ lists and sit outside our file, so we hold zero facts on them. Work, waterproof, winter and women's Chelsea boots are out of scope.
What should you look for in men's Chelsea boots?
Look at the construction, outsole, width and return terms first. Stridewise calls the Chelsea the hardest boot to recommend, mostly because you cannot adjust the fit. Eight pages state a Goodyear welt for the boot (nine with the Chelsea 5 at brand level) and eight state an origin, three through a workshop profile. See Goodyear welt construction and the shoe width chart.
How should a Chelsea boot fit?
A new Chelsea should feel snug and secure across the instep, short of painful, according to HolloShoe's buying guide, because the elastic and leather relax with wear. Makers say:
- Thursday: a half size smaller than your usual sneaker size on the product page; its FAQ adds the same size as your usual leather boots or dress shoes.
- Meermin: UK sizes, one full size down from your US size.
- R.M. Williams: AU/UK sizing.
- Grant Stone: the UK last runs a half-size large.
- Hevias: fits true to size, snug through the instep at first.
Quick answers
Which brand is best for Chelsea boots?
Pick by build, not by brand: the Cavalier is the lowest-priced Chelsea whose page states a Goodyear welt, at $199. Seven of our 12 brands state a Goodyear welt on a Chelsea, eight with Crockett & Jones at brand level.
What are some good quality men's Chelsea boots?
Start with the nine Chelsea boots whose pages state a Goodyear welt, from the Cavalier at $199 to the Chelsea 5 at $940, which states it at brand level.
Are Goodyear-welted Chelsea boots resoleable?
Yes, a Goodyear welt can be resoled: seven pages say the boot itself can be, and two describe a brand-level repair service. Goodyear welt construction explains how a cobbler replaces the sole.
Bottom line
Start with the Thursday Cavalier for a stated welt at $199. Choose the Meermin 101050 or the Journeyman for a wholecut, the Red Wing for a USA origin and an EE width, the R.M. Williams for a Narrow width, and the Diplomat for a León-made Chelsea at $295. Check your width and the return terms before you buy.
