Two loafers, one blazer.
Our best overall loafer is the Thursday Lincoln, a leather-soled penny loafer at $180 in sizes 6 to 16, resoleable per its product page (desktop view), with free exchange or return shipping on items of $80 or more and 4.9 from 452 reviews. Prices checked October 11, 12 and 16, 2026.
We compared 11 loafers from 8 brands, and the tables print every blank, ours included. The page covers penny and slip-on loafers.
I think fit comes first. Once a pair fits and has settled in, it is extremely comfortable, like a good baseball glove. New to loafers? Read what are loafers. Boots instead? See best boots for men. Or shop our loafers.

Best overall: Thursday Lincoln
The Lincoln is a penny loafer in full-grain dark brown leather with a hand-stitched moccasin toe, a Blake stitch and a glove-leather lining, at $180.
It passes five tests: a price under $250, a maker statement that the shoe can be resoled (its product page says so at desktop view; Thursday's FAQ adds a brand-level line for men's boots and dress shoes), a review count, stated return terms and a leather outsole. The Weston passes too. The Lincoln leads at $180 against $249, with 452 reviews against 2.
One commenter on r/malefashionadvice called the Lincoln and a Beckett Simonon Cohen "nice options and good value for money", but added that "an issue on both is the toe points up", the only saved comment that names the Lincoln.
Pros
- Resoleable, per its product page (desktop view)
- Free exchange or return shipping on items of $80 or more
Watch out for
- Thursday does not name a country for this style; its FAQ lists factories in Mexico, Portugal, Spain and the USA
- One commenter did not like a toe that points up
Skip it if you want a Goodyear welt or a width choice; the Lincoln page shows no width choice.
Lowest-priced loafer with a stated Goodyear welt: Meermin 514040
The 514040 is a penny loafer in boxcalf from the Zonta tannery in Italy, Flex Goodyear welted, on the Sway last, at $230.
It is the lowest-priced of the three loafers in our file whose pages state a Goodyear welt, at $230, ahead of Grant Stone at $412 and Alden at $708 (Alden at brand level). The three cheaper loafers in our file state a Blake stitch or leave construction blank.
GQ named the 514040 its best overall loafer, and an editor there wrote that the construction "really holds up to shoes three times its price". A reviewer at Stridewise found the leather on a Sway-last Meermin "fairly thin: good for summer weight and breathability, not quite so great for durability".
Our file holds 10 Meermin lines: 8 positive, 2 mixed; three name the 514040.
Pros
- A Flex Goodyear welt at $230
- Sizes 2 to 15 in a UK fitting
Watch out for
- UK sizing and two return articles that disagree
Skip it if you want a stated origin, resole route or rating. Meermin's page is silent on all three.
Best unlined penny loafer: G.H. Bass Larson Heritage Weejuns
The Larson Heritage Weejuns is a penny loafer in full-grain leather with a cotton canvas vamp, Blake-stitched, with a leather sole, at $225.
It is the lower-priced of the two loafers in our file whose pages say unlined, at $225 against the Crockett & Jones Harvard 2 at $900. Bass's page lists it as resoleable, in sizes 6 to 14.
Our file holds 7 Weejuns lines (4 positive, 2 mixed, 1 negative), but none names the Larson Heritage: GQ's pick is the Larson Weejuns Loafers.
Pros
- Blake stitch and a leather sole
- Resoleable, per the page
Watch out for
- Returns by mail carry a $7.95 fee, and online exchanges are unavailable
- The page says the style runs big and recommends sizing down a half size
Skip it if you need a stated width or country of origin.
Best stacked-leather-sole loafer: Beckett Simonon Weston
The Weston is a tubular moccasin, fully hand-stitched, in full-grain Italian calfskin with a stacked leather sole, at $249.
It is the only loafer in our file whose page lists a stacked leather sole. It comes in D width only, sizes 7 to 14.
Beckett Simonon lists a 30-day money-back guarantee and a 1-year warranty. Its page shows 5.0 from 2 reviews, and the Weston is named in zero saved comments.
Pros
- A stacked leather sole
- A 1-year warranty
Watch out for
- The page says Blake stitching ensures it is resoleable but is silent on any resole service
Skip it if you need a width other than D.
Best suede loafer, lower price: Hevias The Broker
The Broker is a suede slip-on loafer with a leather lining, handcrafted in León, Mexico, in five colorways: dune, ginger, Italian navy, Italian olive and Italian fawn. It costs $295, in sizes 8 to 13.
It is the lower-priced of the two suede loafers in our file, at $295 against the Alden 9693F at $708.
Two colorway pages list a material option named Water Proof Suede; the product description on all five says suede, so waterproofing stays out of our claims.
George's take: I call Hevias modern Western, with chukkas, Chelsea boots and loafers.
Pros
- A lower price than the Alden's $708, at $295
- A leather lining
Watch out for
- Under our refund policy, pairs bought with a discount code or other promotion return for exchange or store credit only
Skip it if you want a stated welt, sole or width, or a size above 13.
Best New England-made loafer: Alden 9693F
The 9693F is a penny loafer in snuff suede on the Copley last, with a flexible single leather outsole, in D and E widths, at $708.
It is the only loafer in our file whose page names a US region as its origin: New England.
Our file holds 9 Alden lines, 7 about fit (1 positive, 4 mixed, 2 negative), none naming the 9693F. A commenter on Reddit's r/malefashionadvice wrote, "Aldens are made on several different lasts, and the sizing varies a lot among them."
Pros
- A leather outsole and a Goodyear welt (brand level)
- D and E widths
Watch out for
- Sizing varies by last, per Reddit commenters
Skip it if you want to try before you buy, or $708 is more than you plan to spend.
Best for wider feet: Grant Stone Traveler
The Traveler Penny is a Goodyear-welted penny loafer in vegetable-tanned Italian baby calf on the Alexander last, with a leather outsole, at $412.
It is the only loafer in our file that lists an EEE (Extra Wide) width, alongside D (Standard) and E (Wide), in sizes 6 to 13. Grant Stone says every pair is crafted in its factory on Xiamen Island, China.
Our file holds 7 Grant Stone lines: 4 positive, 1 mixed, 2 negative. A reviewer at Stridewise called the Traveler "Unusually tough, built to last through many resoles", but "Pricy compared to others on this list, even the American made ones".
Pros
- Three widths, D to EEE
- A Goodyear welt
Watch out for
- Refunds carry a $15 restocking fee on the prepaid label
Skip it if you want a US-made loafer or a price under $412.
Which other loafers are in our file?
Beckett Simonon's Hudson is a loafer in full-grain leather with a vachetta lining, in D width, at $219. It is the only loafer in our file whose page lists an EVA outsole, and its construction is left blank on the page.
Crockett & Jones's Harvard 2 is a black calf loafer, unlined, on the 376 last, with a city rubber outsole, in E (Standard) width and UK sizes 5.5 to 13, at $900. Its $900 is the highest price among the 11 loafers. Its page does not state a country, a welt or a construction method. A reviewer at GQ wrote, "It's an unlined style too, making it much softer and slipper-like."
Our Banker is a loafer in obsidian water buffalo leather with a leather lining, handcrafted in León, Mexico, at $295, in sizes 8 to 13. It is the only water buffalo loafer in our file. See The Banker.
What does Bespoke Western make in loafers, and what do our pages leave blank?
Hevias makes three loafer styles: the Broker in five suede colorways, the Banker in water buffalo and the Magnate in onyx calfskin, all handcrafted in León, Mexico. See The Magnate and Hevias.
Every Hevias loafer in our file costs $295: the Broker, the Banker and the Magnate.
Our refund policy gives you 30 days from delivery to exchange for full credit or to "send them back for a full refund to your original payment method". Items bought with a discount code, sitewide promotion or other special offer are "eligible for exchange or store credit only".
Our Hevias loafer pages leave construction, outsole and width blank, and our file holds zero owner lines for them.
How we picked
I think construction is the value of a boot: a well-built pair, looked after, lasts a lifetime. Our Hevias loafer pages are silent on construction, so the Broker earns its slot on leather and price.
The file holds 15 listings (the Broker has five colorways) saved from makers' own pages on October 11 and 12, 2026, with Hevias prices re-checked October 16, 2026. It also holds 39 loafer lines, 17 from GQ and Stridewise and 22 from Reddit, and every line quoted here is labeled.
Bespoke Western makes and sells Alvies, Hevias and Olsen-Stelzer boots and Hevias loafers, and two of the ten loafers in the tables are ours: the Broker and the Banker. Each slot is a test run on all 15 listings, such as price among stated welts or a stated EEE width, and the overall pick uses the five tests above. A house loafer earns a slot only where a stated fact earns it.
Allen Edmonds, Astorflex, Nordstrom and Dr. Martens rank on page one for these searches but sit outside our file, so this page leaves them unjudged.
What should you look for in men's loafers?
Look at the sole, the lining and the build first, then your width and size, then the return terms.
Check your width with our shoe width chart. On sizing, makers and reviewers say:
- Thursday: "Order ½ size smaller than you wear in sneakers".
- Grant Stone: the Alexander last runs a half-size large.
- Meermin: UK sizes, with a UK-to-US chart on the page. A Stridewise reviewer advised, "subtract 1.5 from your Brannock with these".
- Beckett Simonon: order your Brannock size.
- Bass: the page says size down a half size; a GQ reviewer of the Larson Weejuns suggested your true size.
- Crockett & Jones: UK sizes.
- Hevias: fits true to size.
- Alden: Reddit commenters say sizing varies by last.
Which brand makes the most comfortable loafers?
Our file leaves comfort unranked, since it is a judgment of fit and absent from the catalog fields.
Quick answers
What is the best loafer brand for men?
Our file holds 8 loafer brands and ranks them on facts alone. Alden, Grant Stone, Beckett Simonon and Hevias name where they make their loafers.
Do loafers need breaking in?
Some do: a reviewer at GQ said Weejuns "require a little bit of breaking in" and called the Meermin "easy to break in".
Are loafers resoleable?
Four makers say so: Bass for the Weejuns, Thursday on the Lincoln's product page (desktop view), Beckett Simonon for the Weston and Grant Stone for the Traveler. A welt a cobbler can replace is a construction fact, and three loafers state one.
Bottom line
Start with the Thursday Lincoln: resoleable per its product page (desktop view), free exchange or return shipping on items of $80 or more and 4.9 from 452 reviews at $180. Choose the Meermin for a welt at $230, the Grant Stone for wider feet, the Alden for a New England origin, and the Broker for suede at $295, below the Alden's $708.
