The Alvies Boot Tassel is a clip-on tassel with a silver pendant. It costs $59 in five colors. See the Boot Tassel.

Alvies' own site says it is handcrafted with top leathers and premium metal hardware. It also says it fits any boot with a pull strap and has an adjustable button backing. Tecovas' tassel charm also names pull straps, but its page said sold out on October 11, while all five Alvies colors were in stock.

A reviewer on Alvies' own site wrote "Love these! Well made!"

George's take: I see Alvies as the way in for a new boot buyer, someone in tighter jeans and t-shirts who heads out to festivals and the nightlife.

At $25 it is the lowest-priced tassel in the ladder, against $30, $45 and $59. It is also the only tassel in the ladder whose page says how many come in an order.

Fairfax & Favor's Suede Boot Tassels in Tan cost $30, and its Mahogany Leather tassels cost $45. Both are screw-back tassels made in Portugal.

The Tan suede holds 4.9 stars on 116 reviews and the Mahogany leather 5.0 on 45, the deepest review base of any accessory in the ladder.

At $24 it is the lowest-priced clip-on charm in the ladder, against $59 and $130. Boot Barn lists a $19.95 Charm Boot Bracelet with a lobster claw closure; its page does not say how it sits on a boot.

What are boot chains for, and which should you buy?

Boot chains, also called boot harness straps, are decorative straps that wrap the boot; Dangerous Threads calls them "a decorative, ornamental version of the traditional spur straps worn by working cowhands." Best chain with the specs on the page: Dangerous Threads Boot Chains

Dangerous Threads' black topgrain boot chains cost $44.95 a pair. They are handcrafted in Nashville, Tennessee from genuine 5-ounce topgrain leather, with a 2.5 mm steel curb underchain and clip that runs under the boot.
