Our best overall value chukka is the Thursday Scout: $160, a page that calls it resoleable, and 4.8 from 5,286 reviews. Thursday offers free exchange or return shipping within 30 days on items of $80 or more, and says to order a half size down from your usual sneaker size.

We compared 13 chukka models from 10 brands, and the tables print every blank, ours included. Three pass our four overall tests, and the lowest price breaks the tie. Prices checked October 11, 2026 (Meermin and Grant Stone: October 12, 2026; Hevias: October 16, 2026). The page covers laced ankle chukkas for men.

Who makes the best chukka boots for men?

No single maker wins every test, so the picks split by price, build, origin and sole. Six of the 13 models state a Goodyear welt, two of them (Crockett & Jones and Alden) at brand level, ten list a width (Thursday's at brand level), and our five Hevias listings cost $325 (Statesman) or $295 (Explorer).

Best overall value: Thursday Scout

The Scout in Dune is an oil snuff suede chukka with a glove-leather lining and a cork rubber outsole, at $160.

It passes four tests, each stated on Thursday's page or FAQ: a price under $300, a resoleable build, a rating from 30 or more reviews and stated return terms. The Red Wing Weekender and the Beckett Simonon Ellis pass too, so ties go by lower price first, then more reviews. The Scout is $160, the Weekender $269.99 and the Ellis $279.

Outlets disagree on how it is built. Thursday's page says stitchout. BootSpy and a Stridewise editor call it stitchdown, and Gentleman Within's Scout entry says all Thursday boots have a Goodyear welt. We print Thursday's word and leave the question open.

Our file holds 8 Scout lines: 5 positive, 2 mixed, 1 negative. A reviewer at BootSpy called it "one of the best bang-for-buck chukkas on the market", while a commenter on r/BuyItForLife, in an old post, found the Scouts "uncomfortable and heavy for the build".

Pros

  • Resoleable, per the page and FAQ
  • 4.8 from 5,286 reviews

Watch out for

  • Thursday's product page states no width option; its FAQ says Standard unless noted. BootSpy (updated April 3, 2024) says many negative reviews cite a narrow fit and suggests EE/EEE Wide sizes for wider feet; another BootSpy article says it "fits a little looser".

Skip it if you want a stated country of origin or a welt on Thursday's own page.

Lowest-priced chukka with a stated Goodyear welt: Meermin 101468

The 101468 is a Goodyear-welted suede chukka on the Hiro last, with a calf lining, at $235. Meermin's page prices it in US dollars.

At $235 it is the lowest-priced of the six chukka models in our file whose own pages state a Goodyear welt, ahead of Meermin's 514460 at $250 and our Statesman at $325.

Misiu Academy's list (published December 2020, last modified November 2022, labeled 2023 Edition) ranks the 101468 first of 20. Its pick is the dark brown calf on a Dainite sole; this row is brown suede on a studded rubber sole. Of that version its editor wrote, "While probably the lowest quality shoe on this list there are few that can deny the value that Meermin brings at this price point."

Pros

  • A Goodyear welt stated on the page at $235
  • UK sizes 4.5 to 15 in an E (medium) fitting

Watch out for

  • UK sizing: the page says to take one full size down from your US size. Two help-center articles disagree on returns, 30 days and 15.

Skip it if you want a stated country of origin or a rating on the maker's page.

Best USA-made: Red Wing Weekender

The Weekender Chukka 3315 is a roughout, oiled-leather chukka made in USA, with stitchdown construction, at $269.99.

At $269.99 it is the lower-priced of the two chukkas in our file whose pages name a US origin, against the Alden 13781C at $783 (New England). It passes the same four tests as the Scout (4.1 from 31 reviews) and ranks second on the tie order.

A Stridewise editor called it "incredibly lightweight and flexible thanks to the stitchdown construction and extra-thin rubber sole". A reviewer at HiConsumption found them a little hard to get on at first and a little tight at the mid-foot, but was "really surprised by how comfortable the insole was here".

Pros

  • Made in USA and resoleable
  • Free return shipping

Watch out for

  • Stridewise lists a downside in its Weekender section: "Some people prefer the stability of a Goodyear welted boot; these are very squishy underfoot."

Skip it if you need a width other than D or a Goodyear welt; the page says Stitchdown.

Best single-layer leather sole: Beckett Simonon Ellis

The Ellis is a full-grain Italian calfskin chukka with a vachetta lining, made at the Bogotá, Colombia workshop its page profiles, at $279. It comes with a Leather Sole or a Rubber Sole at the same $279; the single-layer leather sole is the Leather option.

It is the only chukka in our file whose page describes a single-layer leather sole. Quince's outsole is leather and rubber, and Grant Stone's is butyl leather.

The maker says Blake stitching "ensures the shoes are sturdy and resoleable with minimal break-in" and calls the leather sole "easy to replace when needed". It passes the same four tests (4.9 from 185 reviews) and ranks third on the tie order.

Our file holds 4 Ellis lines, all from BootSpy: 2 positive, 2 mixed. A reviewer there called it "easily the best dress chukka for the money, in my opinion".

Pros

  • A single-layer leather sole on the Leather option, and a vachetta lining
  • A 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects

Watch out for

  • Made to order: the page says the process "takes between 10 to 12 weeks to complete".

Skip it if you need a width other than D or a Goodyear welt; the page says Blake stitching.

Lowest price in our file: Quince Heritage Suede Chukka

The Heritage Suede Chukka is a Blake stitched cow suede chukka with a cow leather lining, at $140.

At $140 it is the lowest-priced of the 13 chukka models in our file, with the Scout and the Danner Forest next at $160.

Quince shows 4.9 from 92 reviews, and our file holds 4 of them: 1 positive, 2 mixed, 1 negative. One reviewer on Quince's own page found them "very narrow compared to similar styles", and another wrote "Extremely comfortable boots that look great for an excellent value."

Pros

  • $140 with 365-day easy returns
  • Blake stitched, with a leather lining

Watch out for

  • Fit reports split between very narrow and a little roomy

Skip it if you need a stated width or resole route; Quince's page states neither.

Best Goodyear welt with a leather outsole: Grant Stone Unlined Chukka

The Unlined Chukka is a Goodyear-welted bourbon suede chukka on the Leo last, with a butyl leather outsole, at $412.

It is the only chukka in our file whose page states both a Goodyear welt and a leather outsole. Grant Stone says every pair is crafted in its factory on Xiamen Island, China.

Pros

  • A Goodyear welt and a leather outsole on one boot
  • D and E widths

Watch out for

  • Refunds carry a $15 restocking fee per pair on the prepaid label

Skip it if you want a US-made boot or a rating from more than 7 reviews.

Best water-repellent suede: Crockett & Jones Chiltern

The Chiltern is a dark brown repello suede chukka with a Dainite rubber outsole, at $770.

It is the only chukka in our file whose page calls the suede upper water repellent. The page says the repello suede is "tanned to be water repellent".

The listing states no country for the boot; the one England line on it names the Dainite sole maker. A repair tile says Crockett & Jones offers a refurbishment service for its Goodyear welted shoes and boots, so the welt is a brand-level statement.

Pros

  • Water-repellent suede, per the page
  • 5.0 from 32 votes, with 8 written reviews

Watch out for

  • UK sizes 6 to 13, with the welt stated at brand level and no origin stated

Skip it if you want to spend under $770 or need a width other than E (Standard).

Which other chukkas are in our file?

The Alden Shop's 13781C is a Brown Chromexcel chukka on the Barrie last, at $783. Its page says "Handcrafted in New England" and that all Alden boots use a Goodyear welt, a brand-level statement.

Meermin's 514460 is a Flex Goodyear welted waxy calf chukka on the Negon last, with a sheepskin lining, at $250.

Beckett Simonon's Harlan is a full-grain calfskin chukka in D width, at $279; its description says rubber lug outsole and its page tags "EVA + Rubber Sole"; its page states no construction or rating.

Danner's Forest Chukka is a nubuck chukka made in Vietnam, in D (Medium) width, at $160, with 4.5 from 532 reviews. The $160 is a Sale Price with no regular price saved, and the page says Recraftable: No and Fits True to Size, while a HiConsumption reviewer with wider feet wrote that "these just ran too small".

What does Bespoke Western make in chukkas, and what do our pages leave blank?

Hevias makes two chukkas, the Statesman in three colorways and the Explorer in two, and our pages leave the outsole and width blank on all five. All five are handcrafted in León, Mexico, per our pages. See the Statesman in brandy calfskin, chocolate suede and slate suede, and the Explorer in bourbon and obsidian.

Hevias chukka Price Made in Construction Outsole Leather Widths
Statesman - Italian Brandy Calfskin $325 León, Mexico Goodyear welted Not stated Italian calfskin Not stated

The Statesman costs $325, price checked October 16, 2026. Its page says Goodyear welted and "built to be resoled", so a cobbler can resole it. By price it ranks third of the six chukka models whose pages state a Goodyear welt, behind Meermin at $235 and $250.

The Explorer costs $295 in bourbon calfskin and in obsidian calfskin, checked the same day. Its pages also state no construction, so we do not call it welted. Our file holds no owner line for any Hevias chukka.

Our refund policy gives full-price items 30 days from delivery to exchange them or "send them back for a full refund to your original payment method"; check the terms before you buy.

George's take: I call Hevias modern Western, with chukkas, Chelsea boots and loafers.

How we picked

I think construction is the value of a boot: a well-built pair, looked after, lasts a lifetime. The Statesman wins none of the seven slots: Meermin undercuts it on welted price ($235 and $250 against $325), and our pages state no outsole or width. It sits under What we make with every fact printed.

The file holds 16 listings saved from makers' own pages on October 11 and 12, 2026, with Hevias prices re-checked October 16, 2026. Each slot is a test run on all 16 listings. A boot earns a slot on a stated fact, and a blank is never held against it; it only means that boot cannot earn that slot. For the overall pick, ties go to the lower price first, then more reviews.

Bespoke Western makes and sells Alvies, Hevias and Olsen-Stelzer boots, and two of the 13 chukka models are ours: the Statesman and the Explorer.

Clarks, Allen Edmonds and Oak Street Bootmakers appear in the lists we read, but their pages would not load for us (a 403 on the addresses we tried), so they are not in our file.

What should you look for in chukka boots?

Look at the build and sole first, then your width and size, then the return terms. Check your width with our shoe width chart. Makers on size:

  • Grant Stone: the Leo last runs a half-size large.
  • Meermin: UK sizes, with a UK-to-US chart on the page.
  • Beckett Simonon: order your Brannock size.

I think fit comes first. Once a pair fits and has settled in, it is extremely comfortable, like a good baseball glove.

Quick answers

Can you resole a chukka?

A Goodyear welt lets a cobbler replace the sole, and Danner says its Forest is not recraftable. See Goodyear welt construction.

Is there a waterproof chukka in our file?

No saved page calls its chukka waterproof. Crockett & Jones names a water-repellent suede, and Danner says Non-waterproof. Read can suede get wet and how to waterproof boots.

Do chukkas need breaking in?

Hevias says its chukkas fit true to size, and its calfskin pages add that they are structured at first, then soften with wear. A Quince reviewer wrote, "though they fit true to size, they do need to be broke in".

Bottom line

Start with the Thursday Scout: a resoleable build, free return shipping on items of $80 or more and 4.8 from 5,286 reviews at $160. Choose the Meermin 101468 for a stated welt at $235, the Weekender for a USA-made boot, and the Grant Stone for a welt, a leather outsole and two widths at $412.
