A leather dopp kit, packed for the road.
A dopp kit is a small travel bag for toiletries and grooming tools, named for Charles Doppelt, a Chicago leather-goods maker. For most buyers the best leather one is the Lifetime Leather Toiletry Bag: $90, full-grain, made in Arizona, with a waterproof liner. It also costs the least. For bison, the Hevias Heritage Dopp Kit is $125.
We compared 8 leather dopp kits from 8 brands, with prices checked October 11, 2026 (the Hevias price on October 16). This guide sets each kit's leather, lining, size, warranty and country side by side, and checks the 1919 and 1926 origin dates against USPTO and patent records. Which leather dopp kit is best under $100?

What is a dopp kit?
A dopp kit is a travel toiletry bag: a compact case, typically leather, vinyl or cloth, that organizes grooming tools. Moore & Giles gives that definition and notes the spelling Dop Kit. Gravel calls it the older, more American name for a toiletry bag.
Why is it called a dopp kit, and who made the first one?
Gravel says the name is short for Doppelt, and Charles Doppelt's Chicago firm owned the DOPP mark. Who made the first kit, and when, is disputed. The dated records we pulled start in 1936.
Writers give four answers. Moore & Giles, Pack Hacker and NutSac's Carry Lounge say 1919. Man of Many says 1926. Buffalo Jackson and Luxe Digital say the early 1900s, Gravel says Doppelt's company popularized the case then, and InsideHook says the 1920s. None of them gives a patent or registration number.
Buffalo Jackson writes that it seems Doppelt's nephew and employee, Jerome Harris, invented the case. Moore & Giles and Buffalo Jackson say the US Army supplied the kits in World War II.
The USPTO and patent records give these dates.
| Record | What it shows |
|---|---|
| USPTO DOPP KIT, Reg. 5,468,111 | Owner of record: Buxton Acquisition Co., LLC. Registered May 15, 2018. Claims first use on July 1, 1936. Cancelled November 29, 2024. |
| USPTO DOPP KIT, Reg. 1,197,268 | Owner of record: Samsonite Corporation. Registered June 8, 1982. Claims first use on July 2, 1936. Cancelled March 15, 2003. |
| USPTO DOPP, Reg. 602,007 | Owner of record: Charles Doppelt & Co. Inc., Chicago. Registered February 15, 1955. Claims ownership of Reg. 341,470, registered December 8, 1936. Expired November 20, 1995. |
| US patent 2,123,454, "Container" | Charles Doppelt, Chicago. Application April 13, 1936; patented July 12, 1938. A collapsible utility bag with a waterproof lining. |
| US design patent 101,439 | "Design for a bag for toilet articles," Charles Doppelt, Chicago. Application August 12, 1936; patented October 6, 1936. |
| USPTO slogan, Reg. 1,748,499 | "A TRADITION OF FINE CRAFTSMANSHIP SINCE 1919 GENUINE DOPP ACCESSORIES." Owner of record: Buxton Acquisition Company, L.L.C. Registered January 26, 1993. Cancelled August 11, 2023. |
The 1919 date appears in a registered slogan, the last row. The dated filings start in 1936.
These records show Doppelt filing for a utility-bag patent and a toilet-bag design patent in 1936, and two DOPP KIT registrations that list first use that July.
They leave open who made the first kit and when, so we set the claims beside the records and leave the year open.
Is a dopp kit the same as a toiletry bag?
Yes. Gravel says the two terms mean the same thing today, and Moore & Giles says leather dopp kits tend to be more structured, with multiple compartments, while wash bags are softer and simpler. Pack Hacker puts the difference down to a trademark.
The DOPP KIT registration (Reg. 5,468,111) was cancelled on November 29, 2024 because the registrant filed no acceptable Section 8 declaration. The one-word DOPP mark (Reg. 1,193,631) is live and owned by Buxton Asia Limited.
What should you look for in a leather dopp kit?
Check five things in this order: the leather grade, the lining, the zipper, the size and the warranty. The table below lists what each maker states for lining, size and warranty, plus personalization.
I hold that construction is the value of a boot. That is a boot rule, so for a kit, read the grade, the liner and the zipper before the logo.
- Grade: five makers state full-grain, and the first table lists the rest. Our guides explain full-grain vs top-grain leather and whether genuine leather is real leather.
- Lining: five makers name one. Hevias, Steel Horse and King Ranch leave it out.
- Zipper: Lifetime Leather and Popov name solid brass, King Ranch antiqued brass, Buffalo Jackson YKK and Tecovas UCAN metal.
- Size: seven makers state one, and Hevias gives none. Stetson lists centimeters.
- Warranty: Lifetime Leather and Popov back theirs for life, Buffalo Jackson and King Ranch for one year, and Tecovas for 12 months. Hevias, Stetson and Steel Horse state none.
| Product | Lining | Size | Warranty | Personalization |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lifetime Leather Toiletry Bag | Waterproof nylon liner | Standard: 4" x 4" x 10"; Large: 5" x 5" x 10" | Lifetime: fix or replace (materials and workmanship, responsible use) | Optional fire-branded personalization, up to 4 characters |
| Steel Horse Leather The Nomad Toiletry Bag | Not stated | 9.8" x 5.5" x 4.5" (25 x 14 x 11.5 cm) | Not stated | Not stated |
| Buffalo Jackson Roosevelt Buffalo Leather Dopp Kit (Dark Oak) | Polyester/nylon-lined interior | 9"L x 4.5"H x 4.25"W | One-year leather goods warranty | Not stated |
| Popov Leather Toiletry Bag | Lined interior (keeps leaking bottles off the outer panels) | Outside: 8.5" x 4" x 4.5" | Lifetime guarantee on materials and workmanship | Free laser-engraved initials, a name or a short date on the front panel |
| Hevias The Heritage Dopp Kit | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
| Stetson 160th Anniversary Tooled Leather Dopp Kit | Twill lining | 27 cm x 11 cm x 15 cm | Not stated | Not stated |
| King Ranch Kineño Leather Dopp Kit | Not stated | 10" x 4 1/2" x 5" | One year: repair or replace if defective in material or workmanship (policy page) | Free personalization, up to 3 initials |
| Tecovas Bartlett Hanging Travel Kit | 500 denier water-repellent nylon lining | 9" L x 6" H x 4 1/2" D | 12-month limited warranty on items deemed defective (policy page) | Not stated |
How do you clean and care for a leather dopp kit?
Wipe it with a damp cloth and condition it every few months. That is Lifetime Leather's routine. Steel Horse adds mild soap, and King Ranch names its own cleaner and conditioner.
Moore & Giles advises a cool, dry spot, kept slightly open to let air in. For the method, see our guide to cleaning leather shoes.
How we picked
We compared 8 leather dopp kits from 8 brands that were listed for sale on October 11, 2026, and checked each price that day; we rechecked the Hevias price on October 16. The criteria, in order: stated leather grade, country of origin, lining and zipper, size, warranty, personalization and price.
Every spec comes from the maker's own product and policy pages. The origin facts come from the press pages and USPTO and patent records named above. We did not handle or test the kits.
We left out two kits whose pages showed no way to buy them on October 11, 2026: the Lucchese Everyday Dopp Kit, listed as Out of Stock, and the Yukon Bags Steele, which showed a Join Waitlist button in place of an add-to-cart button.
Bespoke Western makes and sells Alvies, Hevias and Olsen-Stelzer boots, and the Hevias Heritage Dopp Kit is ours. It earned its slot on its hide, and the tables show what its page leaves unstated.
Quick answers
What does a dopp kit stand for?
Nothing, says Gravel: the name is short for Doppelt, the surname of Charles Doppelt. The DOPP mark was registered in 1955 to Charles Doppelt & Co. Inc. of Chicago.
What is another name for a dopp kit?
Toiletry bag, wash bag or wash kit. Lifetime Leather and Steel Horse call theirs a toiletry bag, and Moore & Giles sells its leather versions as wash kits.
Is a dopp kit a good groomsmen gift?
A kit can carry a groomsman's initials: Popov and King Ranch add them free, and Lifetime Leather offers fire-branding. King Ranch and Lifetime Leather take back no personalized pieces, so confirm the spelling first.
For more picks, see our groomsmen gifts guide.
What do you put in a dopp kit?
Moore & Giles lists a toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, shaving cream, deodorant, cologne, medications and a contact lens case.
Bottom line
Buy the Lifetime Leather Toiletry Bag at $90 for the strongest stated specs and a US-made leather kit. Choose Popov at $119 for free engraving and a lifetime guarantee, or the Hevias Heritage Dopp Kit at $125 if American bison matters more than a stated lining and size.
