Is Genuine Leather Real Leather? What the Label Means

Real hide, grade unstated: read the tag.

Genuine leather contains real hide, and the label leaves the grade unspecified. Wikipedia's leather entry says the term "does not describe a specific grade" and often indicates split leather that has been extensively processed. In some countries it means only that a product "contains leather." The FTC's leather guides never use the phrase.

Is genuine leather real leather?

Yes, it is leather made from animal hide, and the grade behind the word varies. Yukon Bags says the term is used to describe the lowest quality grade of real leather, while Wikipedia says it does not describe a specific grade. Wikipedia adds that some sources treat "genuine leather" as synonymous with bicast leather, or as multiple splits glued together and coated.

John Culliton, a vice president at Horween Leather Company, told Stridewise that many tanneries, and the companies they sell leather to, "come out with marketing terms that don’t necessarily correlate to what the product actually is." Ask two questions: which layer of the hide, and which finish?

What do the FTC's leather guides say about "leather" on a boot?

The guides call the unqualified word "leather" deceptive unless the product is "composed in all substantial parts of leather." Our full grain vs top grain guide covers that rule and the guides' bonded leather example label. The guides are 16 CFR Part 24, and they cover footwear. The phrase "genuine leather" occurs zero times in their codified text (full text read on 4 October 2026).

For a boot, the guides count three parts: the upper, the lining and sock, and the outersole. A label may state the mix by predominance, such as "Upper of manmade materials and leather" when most of the upper is manmade. The guides call themselves a "basis for voluntary compliance."

What are the leather grades, and where does "genuine" fit?

Wikipedia's leather entry lists three grades: top grain (types include full grain and corrected grain), split (types include bicast and suede) and bonded. It adds that "genuine leather" does not describe a specific grade.

Read a bare "genuine leather" tag as a product that contains leather, grade unstated, and ask for the grade when it matters. Our full grain vs top grain guide compares the grades side by side, and the suede guide covers the split side.

What is bonded leather?

Bonded leather is shredded leather scraps held together with polyurethane or latex on a fiber mesh. Wikipedia says the leather fiber share varies from 10% to 90%, and its bonded leather entry says lower-quality material may flake "in as little as a few years," while better varieties are "considered very durable." That entry lists "shoe components" among the uses.

The FTC says a material containing bonded leather "should not be represented, directly or by implication, as being leather." If the material looks like leather and the seller uses the term "bonded leather," the guides call for the percentages of leather fibers and non-leather substances. Wikipedia reports that the European standard EN 15987:2011 sets a minimum of 50% dry leather by weight to use the term.

How can you tell real leather from bonded or fake leather?

Check the tag first, then the structure. The FTC says disclosures belong in a stamping on the product, or on a tag, label or card attached to it. Leather Honey says a "man-made materials" tag, or no tag at all, is a sign the product is not real leather. The PU leather guide covers the edge and pore tests, and Wikipedia describes bonded leather as a fiber or paper backer under a layer of shredded leather fibers.

What do Bespoke Western's boot pages say about their leather?

They describe leather by animal and upper rather than by a grade label: the pages that name a hide name the animal, and the Hevias pages list the upper. Checked 4 October 2026 across 27 Alvies and Hevias boot and loafer pages, the product copy and specifications use none of the words "genuine leather," "full grain," "top grain," "split," "bonded" or "corrected."

Hide the page names Pages Wording on the page
Cowhide The Lamar, The Guadalupe The Lamar: "the highest quality cowhide leather." The Guadalupe: "the cowhide is supple from day one."
Calfskin The Diplomat, The Statesman in brandy, The Heritage Boot in whiskey Upper: "Bourbon calfskin," "Italian calfskin," "Whiskey calfskin"
American bison The Heritage Boot in copper, coal Copper: "An American bison leather boot." Coal: "American Bison leather boot."
Water buffalo The Banker Upper: "Water buffalo leather"
Suede The Statesman in chocolate Upper: "Italian suede"

The 16 Hevias pages carry a Specifications block with an Upper line and list "Leather lining for comfort and breathability." Seven add the line "Goodyear welted." See calfskin vs cowhide and bison and water buffalo leather for these hides. For the grade of a specific pair, ask through the contact page.

Quick answers

Is 100% leather the same as genuine leather?

Not by the words alone. Wikipedia says calling bicast leather "genuine leather" or "100% leather" is considered a misrepresentation in some countries, including the UK, Denmark and New Zealand. The FTC says a statement about the composition of one part should name that part.

Is suede genuine leather?

Suede is a type of leather made from the underside of the animal skin, per Wikipedia. See the suede guide, or the nubuck guide for the top-grain side.

Is PU leather genuine leather?

PU leather is artificial leather, which Wikipedia says usually involves polyurethane or vinyl coatings on a cloth backing. The FTC asks sellers of non-leather material that looks like leather to say so with terms like "Not leather" or "Imitation leather." The PU leather guide shows how to spot it.

Does the grade decide whether a boot can be resoled?

Stridewise ties resoling to how the sole is attached and never mentions leather grade. The Goodyear welt guide explains why, and the PU leather guide carries the Stridewise quotes on cemented and welted soles.

Does the grade change how a boot handles rain?

Yes, by one maker's account: Latico Leathers, a leather-bag maker, says full grain is naturally water-resistant to a certain extent and bonded leather is the least water-resistant. Our guide to whether leather is waterproof covers rain, snow, salt and drying.

Bottom line

Genuine leather is real hide with the grade left unspecified. For boots, the FTC's guides accept disclosing non-leather materials by part: upper, lining and sock, outersole. Ask for the grade when it matters, and treat "bonded" as scraps on a backer.
