Types of Cowboy Boots: Styles Compared and How to Pick

|George Frederick Baker, Sr.
Five styles of cowboy boots in a row on a sunlit porch bench, from a tall classic boot to a short roper and an exotic-skin pair

One family of boots, several jobs.

Wikipedia names two basic cowboy boot styles, classic Western and roper. Sellers and makers list four to six styles, and between them name stockman, buckaroo, work, short, dress and exotic. Pick the classic for the saddle, the roper for walking, the stockman for long days on foot, and the buckaroo for the tallest protection.

This guide sets six style lists side by side, shows where their numbers disagree, and names the house boots that fit each style the house builds.

How many types of cowboy boots are there?

The count depends on the source: Wikipedia names two basic styles, Ariat four, Eli's Western Wear five, and Riding Warehouse, Tecovas and Murdoch's six each. The table lists the styles each one names, counted from each source's own style list.

Source Styles it names Count
Wikipedia Western (classic), roper 2
Ariat Traditional, roper, short, dress 4
Eli's Western Wear Classic Western, roper, stockman, work, buckaroo 5
Riding Warehouse Traditional, roper, work, short, exotic, dress 6
Murdoch's Traditional, work, roper, short, exotic, dress 6
Tecovas Western, roper, work, exotic, zip, booties 6

All six lists share classic and roper. Of the five lists that go beyond two styles, only Eli's names both stockman and buckaroo. Toe shape is a separate choice, covered in the toe shapes guide.

What are classic, roper and stockman boots?

A classic boot has a tall shaft and an angled heel, a roper has a short shaft and a low squared heel, and a stockman sits between them with a lower, wider heel and a deeper scallop. Wikipedia and Eli's give the definitions, and Tecovas adds shaft and heel numbers.

Style Shaft Heel Source
Classic To at least mid-calf Angled, usually over 1 inch Wikipedia
Classic 12 inches (11 for women) 1.5 to 1.75 inches, stacked Tecovas
Classic 11 to 12 inches Cowboy heel, taller than the roper heel Murdoch's
Roper Above the ankle, short of mid-calf Squared, usually under 1 inch Wikipedia
Roper About 10 inches 1.5 inches or less Tecovas
Roper Shorter than a classic Walking heel, typically 1 inch or less Eli's
Stockman Hybrid of classic and roper; deep scallop Lower and broader than a classic, still angled Eli's

The roper heel shows the gap: Wikipedia says usually under 1 inch, Eli's says typically an inch or less, and Tecovas says 1.5 inches or less. Read the seller's or maker's number for the pair you are buying, and see the heel types guide for the shapes.

Ariat says ropers began as boots for roping cattle, with a lower heel and a shorter shaft that stops below the calf. Eli's adds that roping competitors needed to dismount quickly and run on foot. White's, a bootmaker, describes its Stockman as built for wide open spaces and long hours, with a modified cowboy heel.

What is a buckaroo boot?

A buckaroo boot is the tall, decorated cowboy boot. Murdoch's puts it at about 15 inches, and Eli's says buckaroos have the tallest shafts of any style, sometimes reaching the knee. Tony Lama, a bootmaker, lists a Henley 15-inch buckaroo and describes its buckaroo collection as designed for men who live in the saddle.

Eli's adds that buckaroos carry elaborate, multi-colored stitching, from flowers to flames. The vaquero guide traces the word buckaroo.

What are work, short and dress cowboy boots?

Work cowboy boots add safety features, short boots stop near the ankle, and dress boots add finer stitching or materials.

  • Work: Riding Warehouse says work boots normally carry a thick rubber sole and a wider round toe that can be steel reinforced. It adds that steel toe is not recommended around horses or cattle. Murdoch's lists steel or composite toe caps and slip-resistant soles as options.
  • Short: Ariat says the shaft typically rests just above the ankle. Riding Warehouse says short boots are typically worn as a fashion statement more than as a riding boot. Tecovas lists zip boots at 8 inches for men and 6 for women.
  • Dress: Ariat says dress cowboy boots usually have intricate stitch work or embroidery, or higher-quality materials. Riding Warehouse says they are rarely used for riding.

What are exotic cowboy boots?

Exotic cowboy boots are made from skins other than cowhide. Wikipedia lists alligator, snake, ostrich, lizard, eel, elephant, stingray, elk and American bison, and Tecovas names lizard, alligator, ostrich, python and shark.

The house carries teju lizard and python boots. Read teju lizard boots and python boots for one skin at a time, and the exotic boot decision guide for the whole set.

Which house boots match each style?

The house's The Lamar is modeled on Alvie's grandfather's classic-toe, cowboy-heel boots, The Shoal Creek is what Alvies calls "our version of a square-toe boot," The Manchaca is the house roper, and the exotic pairs come in teju and python. The table repeats what each product page says. The house lists no stockman, buckaroo or work boot.

Style House boot What the product page says
Modeled on a classic-toe, cowboy-heel boot The Lamar Based on the boots Alvie's grandfather wore: premium cowhide with a classic toe and a cowboy heel
Alvies' version of a square-toe boot The Shoal Creek Heel 1.5 inches, shaft 13 inches, circumference 14.25 to 15.25 inches
Roper The Manchaca Its copy describes the roper boot's short heel and rounded toe
Exotic, teju The Congress Teju lizard
Exotic, python The 6th Street, The Rebel Python

The Shoal Creek's product page lists a 13-inch shaft. Tecovas lists a 12-inch shaft for its western boot (11 for women), and Murdoch's says classic shaft heights are 11 to 12 inches. For classic, roper and Chelsea side by side, read roper vs cowboy boot vs western Chelsea.

Which type of cowboy boot should you pick?

Pick by where your day happens: classic for the saddle, roper for walking, stockman for a long day afoot that still wants a taller boot, buckaroo for tall protection and decoration.

  • Pick a classic for riding: Ariat says its narrow toe and tall heel keep your feet in the stirrups.
  • Pick a roper for walking and casual wear. Ariat names ropers and short boots as the go-to choice for weekends and casual evenings.
  • Pick a stockman for work on your feet that still calls for a taller boot (Eli's).
  • Pick a buckaroo for a statement boot of about 15 inches or more.
  • Pick a work boot for a job site, and check the toe cap rules before you wear steel around animals.
  • Pick a dress or exotic pair for events. The first cowboy boots guide helps a beginner start.

Quick answers

What are cowboy style boots called?

Wikipedia calls the classic style "western (or classic)." Ariat, Riding Warehouse and Murdoch's call it "traditional." Eli's uses "Classic Western."

What kind of cowboy boots do real cowboys wear?

Sources point to different boots for different work. Riding Warehouse says the traditional boot was designed for the stirrup, and White's built its Stockman for long hours. The cowboy outfit guide follows the rest of the working kit.

What does the shape of a cowboy boot mean?

Sources tie toe shape to use. Ariat says a narrow toe eases the boot through the stirrup, and rounded toes leave more room for the toes. The toe guide covers snip, square and round in full.

Are ropers cowboy boots?

Yes. Wikipedia counts the roper as one of the two basic cowboy boot styles, and Ariat calls it an offshoot of the traditional boot.

Do cowboy boots have laces?

Traditionally no. Wikipedia says cowboy boots traditionally have no lacing, and adds that ropers also come in lace-up versions that often fit better around the ankle.

Bottom line

Cowboy boots are one family with two core styles, classic and roper, and a handful of job-specific variants. Sources differ on the count and the numbers, so check the seller's or maker's shaft and heel figures. Start with the boot that matches your day.
