Comfort yes, wear mixed, price is the catch. The review lines praise how Tecovas boots feel on day one: 16 of 27 comfort and break-in lines are positive, 8 mixed and 3 negative. Wear splits them, with 19 of 37 durability lines positive and 12 negative, and 9 of 18 value lines are negative.

We checked 25 Tecovas listings across 22 styles and read 130 review lines from Reddit and press, counted in two separate views. Tecovas prices were checked October 11, 2026, and Alvies prices October 16, 2026. For the wider field, see the best cowboy boots and brands.

Review lines by source and theme

The 130 lines come from two sources that point different ways, so we count them apart: 118 Reddit lines from 29 threads and 12 press lines. Cells read lines (positive/mixed/negative).

Theme Reddit: owners and commenters Press reviewers
Comfort and break-in 24 (15/6/3) 3 (1/2/0)
Durability 34 (17/5/12) 3 (2/1/0)
Quality control 15 (2/5/8) 0
Value 17 (4/4/9) 1 (1/0/0)
Fit 16 (4/9/3) 5 (2/2/1)
Service 12 (9/0/3) 0
All lines 118 (51/29/38) 12 (6/5/1)

We left out the reviews embedded in Tecovas's page data, because we could not confirm which of them a shopper sees.

Reddit runs more negative than press: 38 of its 118 lines are negative, against 1 of 12 in press (a BootSpy line that relays other reviews).

Are Tecovas boots comfortable?

Yes, by the lines: 16 of 27 comfort and break-in lines are positive, 8 mixed and 3 negative.

An owner on Reddit's r/cowboyboots said Tecovas are "by far the most comfortable, right out of the box". A commenter on Reddit's r/cowboyboots found the other side: "The inner sole is too hard". GQ's 2024 reviewer, who received the pair he tested, found "effectively zero break-in time" on the Earl.

Do Tecovas boots last?

The lines split: of 37 durability lines, 19 are positive, 6 mixed and 12 negative. Quality control reads worse, with 13 of 15 quality-control lines mixed or negative.

Eight positive lines report long wear, from almost a year to about 10 years. An owner on Reddit's r/cowboyboots wrote, "I have a couple pairs of Cartwright calfskins that I’ve worn for about 10 years". Three negative lines report short life: a Knox wedge sole at 4 months, sole stitching that frayed within two weeks, and a heel off in one week.

Leather soles draw four critical lines, one of them about concrete after rain; three other lines report soles holding up.

Ten lines name a part that failed: pegs (2 lines), liners, a heel cap, a welt, shaft piping on the Earl, sole stitching, a heel, a wedge sole and a worn leather sole. GQ's reviewer called the welt stitching and peg placement on his pair a little sloppy, and still called the Earl a good deal at $285 in January 2024.

What changed: older pairs and newer prices

Twelve lines say older Tecovas were better or that prices climbed: 9 are negative and 3 mixed, all commenters' claims.

A commenter on Reddit's r/cowboyboots wrote, "Four years ago the Cartwright cowhide was $295, now they are $375".

Tecovas's price history sits outside our file, so the table shows article prices on their dates.

Boot Price printed in the article Tecovas list price, October 11, 2026
Cartwright $295 (GQ product card, January 18, 2024); $345 (Stridewise, July 4, 2024) $375 (Hazelnut cowhide)
Earl $285 (GQ, January 18, 2024, the calfskin pair); $315 (Stridewise, July 4, 2024) $325 (Cafe Goat)
Dean $295 (Stridewise, July 4, 2024); $295 (The Quality Edit, October 7, 2024) $295 (Cafe Goat)
Annie $345 (The Quality Edit, October 7, 2024) $375 (Bone cowhide)
Abby $375 (The Quality Edit, October 7, 2024) $395 (Wine Goat)

Four of the five boots list higher than the article price, and the Dean stands at $295 in both 2024 articles and today. Leathers can differ between a 2024 article and today's listing. The Quality Edit piece is labelled "In partnership with Tecovas", was published October 7, 2024 and updated January 22, 2025, so its prices may date from either.

How are Tecovas boots built?

On a Goodyear welt, by the pages we saved: 21 of 25 listings state one, the Blaze and Garrett rest on Tecovas's brand-level Help Center line, and the Abby and Cody leave construction unstated. 17 list a leather outsole, one of them (the Doc Tan Bison) also listing rubber, and the rest list rubber, hybrid, Vibram or butyl-and-leather soles.

Tecovas's Help Center lists 3/4 Goodyear welt construction, lemonwood pegs, a leather outsole, corkbed filling and an EVA strip. See our Goodyear welt guide.

Three lines claim synthetic or fiberboard parts, among them Celastic counters or toe boxes, a plastic counter and shank, and a cardboard or fiberboard footbed. One reply disputes the footbed claim: "The Tecovas tri-layer insole has three layers, and none of which are fiberboard, cardboard, or any other pulp product". Tecovas's Earl page lists a tri-layer insole with a steel shank and leaves counter material unstated.

Group Where Tecovas says it makes them
Earl, Dean and Emmitt Each product page says "Handcrafted in León, Mexico"
The other 20 listings, except the Knox and LongHaul The pages name no country; the Help Center says heritage-made boots are handcrafted in León, Mexico
Knox and LongHaul The pages name no country. The Help Center says its performance footwear is made by hand in Vietnam, with composite safety toes and the Muckoff tread; the LongHaul page lists both, and the Knox page lists neither

Do Tecovas boots run big?

Sizing splits. Tecovas's Help Center says boots are designed to fit true to standard U.S. shoe sizes, so order what you would normally order.

The lines point both ways: at least two say to go down a size or that Tecovas runs big, one says a size 10 was too small, four say true to size, and two say sizing varies between styles. A commenter on Reddit's r/cowboyboots wrote, "They say go true to size in Tecovas but I find 1/2 smaller is better".

Tecovas lists men's widths as D and EE and says narrower feet should order down a half size for each letter of width difference. For women it gives B-average, with wide calf on select styles, and elsewhere names Womens C as the wide; the 5 women's listings carry a B width.

The 25 listings we checked run $245 to $1,995. The 20 core Western listings sit between $295 and $395, eight of them at $375 (seven in the tables).

A commenter on Reddit's r/cowboyboots wrote, "They are worth it during the Black Friday/ birthday discounts".

Who should buy Tecovas, and who should skip them

Pick Tecovas if

  • You want comfort from the first wear (16 of 27 comfort and break-in lines positive).
  • You want a welted leather-sole boot with a free 30-day exchange (21 of 25 state a welt, 17 a leather sole).

Skip it if

  • You wear leather soles hard on concrete (four lines criticize the leather sole).
  • You plan to resole at a local cobbler and want the warranty intact.
  • You need a fit beyond stock lasts: Olsen-Stelzer makes boots to your measurements from $1,500. See Olsen-Stelzer.

How Tecovas compares with what we make

We paired the Cartwright with Alvies The Lamar (cowhide, Goodyear welt, D and EE widths) and the Daisy with The Trinity (women's, Goodyear welt, B width).

Boot Price Construction Outsole Widths
Tecovas The Cartwright (Hazelnut) $375 3/4 Goodyear welt Leather outsole D, EE
Alvies The Lamar $390 ¾ Goodyear welt 100% leather outsole, midsole and insole, plus a cork filler and a layer of EVA (Alvies FAQ) D, EE
Tecovas The Daisy $295 Goodyear welt Leather outsole B-Average
Alvies The Trinity $330 ¾ Goodyear welt 100% leather outsole, midsole and insole, plus a cork filler and a layer of EVA (Alvies FAQ) B

Prices checked October 16, 2026 for Alvies and October 11, 2026 for Tecovas.

Alvies' FAQ says "Our sole is made of 100% leather: outsole, midsole, and insole." and, in the same answer, "A cork filler molds to your foot over time, and a layer of EVA". Both product pages also list a non-slip rubber bottom on the heel. Tecovas's Help Center also lists corkbed filling and an EVA strip.

The Lamar is $390 and the Trinity $330 (prices checked October 16, 2026). Both cost more than the Tecovas boot they match, by $15 and $35. For the full head-to-head, read the Alvies and Tecovas comparison.

How we counted

The counts cover the 25 listings in our catalog, a sample of Tecovas's range, from pages saved October 11, 2026. The 130 review lines were saved by that date; Reddit threads saved later are not counted here.

To me, construction is the value of a boot: a well-built pair, looked after, lasts a lifetime, and a welted boot can be resoled as often as you like. Fit comes first: I think a boot can be built to fit comfortably out of the box, and a good pair settles in like a good baseball glove.

The 130 lines come from 32 saved sources: 29 Reddit threads we read in October 2026, 2 BootSpy pages and 1 Bob Vila page. A reviewer is a reviewer, and an owner is someone whose line says they own the boot. The file holds no post dates for the Reddit threads, so a line can be years old.

BootSpy says it may earn a commission on its links, and Bob Vila's reviewer says Tecovas offered the chance to try its new work boot line. We also cite GQ, whose reviewer received the pair he tested, Stridewise, which earns commissions, and The Quality Edit, labelled "In partnership with Tecovas", for their printed prices.

Bespoke Western makes and sells Alvies, Hevias and Olsen-Stelzer boots, and the comparison above uses two of ours.

Quick answers

Are Tecovas boots high quality?

Tecovas's product pages showed 19 of the 20 rated styles in our file between 4.6 and 4.9 on October 16, 2026. The lines are less kind on quality control: 13 of 15 are mixed or negative.

Why are Tecovas so expensive?

Tecovas says each boot is made in over 200 steps, by hand, with a Goodyear welt, a leather midsole and lemonwood pegs. Commenters weigh that against the price, and 9 of 18 value lines are negative.

Are Tecovas boots made in the USA?

Tecovas names León, Mexico for heritage boots and Vietnam for performance footwear, and says it designs in Austin, Texas; the pages we saved name no factory in the USA.

Are Tecovas work boots good?

The data are thin: Tecovas displays 4.6 for the Knox and 3.9 for the LongHaul (checked October 16, 2026), and six lines name a work boot.

Bottom line

Buy Tecovas for comfort and a welted leather-sole boot, and expect wear to vary by pair. Pay near the $295 to $375 core or wait for a discount, because 9 of 18 value lines are negative and, for four of the five boots, the 2024 article prices sit below today's list. Tecovas allows exchanges within 30 days if the size is off.
