Tecovas vs Ariat vs Lucchese: Price, Build, Terms

|George Frederick Baker, Sr.
Three pairs of worn cowboy boots, tan, dark brown and cognac, side by side on a wooden porch with a ranch fence and evening light behind

Three makers, side by side.

Ariat is the budget pick, Tecovas the middle and Lucchese the highest priced. A men's boot whose product page names a welt and a leather outsole starts, at list price, at $249.95, $295 and $495. The owner and reviewer lines do not rank the three on how a pair holds up.

We compared 54 listings from the three brands and read 553 owner and reviewer lines. Prices checked October 11, 2026. A boot sold in two colors counts once, at the price of the colorway we kept. For the wider field, see the best cowboy boots and brands.

Not stated means the pages we saved leave it blank. Ariat's pages showed three dated markdowns on October 11, 2026, so the table uses list prices. Lines read n (positive/mixed/negative). Origin is covered in where cowboy boots are made, and the welt in our Goodyear welt guide.

Tecovas vs Ariat: where the two overlap

The two meet at a welted, leather-soled men's boot: 8 Ariat listings (seven Bench Made bison and the Gold Point) and 7 Tecovas listings qualify on the product page, from $249.95 and $295. All 8 Bench Made listings name León, Mexico and a channeled Goodyear leather welt.

BootSpy, a review site that may earn a commission, says the Ariat boots its author tried, the WorkHog among them, are cemented. Ariat's WorkHog page says Resoleable Goodyear welt. Ariat's saved pages state a welt on 12 of 18 listings and say nothing on construction for 6, so we show both and decide neither.

At least 19 Reddit lines in our file set Ariat against Tecovas: 13 favor Ariat, 5 favor Tecovas and 1 calls both good. 10 of the Ariat lines are about quality or price, and 4 of the Tecovas lines are about comfort or plain preference.

A commenter on Reddit's r/cowboyboots wrote: "I would buy the Bench Made over the Tecovas. They are better-made boots". An owner on Reddit's r/cowboyboots added after owning both: "Tecovas are slightly better quality".

Tecovas vs Lucchese: what the extra money buys

The entry boots with a named welt and a leather outsole are $295 at Tecovas and $495 at Lucchese, and the full-quill ostrich pairs are $675 and $895. On the fields we saved, both list a leather outsole on most listings: 16 of 24 Tecovas, 11 of 12 Lucchese.

At least 16 lines set the two against each other: 9 favor Lucchese, 6 favor Tecovas and 1 calls them on par. 8 of the 9 Lucchese lines are about quality, leather or stitching, and 4 of the 6 Tecovas lines are about comfort or price.

An owner on Reddit's r/cowboyboots wrote after owning both: "The Lucchesse is definitely the better boot but has a price to match". An owner on Reddit's r/cowboyboots wrote: "The Tecovas are a nice boot, very comfortable, great everyday boot, and half the price".

Lucchese vs Ariat: the price gap and the sizing question

Lucchese's 12 listings run $495 to $7,295, and 12 of Ariat's 18 sit under $300. At least 8 lines set the two against each other: 6 favor Lucchese, 1 favors Ariat and 1 puts a Bench Made level with a Lucchese.

An owner on Reddit's r/cowboyboots wrote after wearing both: "The Luccheses have more durable leather, a stronger and stouter shaft, and are obviously made to a higher standard".

What do owner and reviewer lines say about each brand?

Comfort is positive for all three: negative comfort and break-in lines are 6 of 33 for Ariat, 4 of 46 for Tecovas and 5 of 32 for Lucchese. Where the complaints land differs: Ariat's negative lines sit most often in durability (14 of 33), Tecovas's in quality control (19 of 63) and Lucchese's in value (23 of 72, 10 of them from one thread) and quality control (22).

On holds up, the negative share is 35% for Ariat, 47% for Tecovas and 30% for Lucchese, and it moves with the sample. On the lines saved by October 11 it was 41, 37 and 34, with Ariat highest; the 120 lines from versus threads moved Tecovas to the top. Capping every thread at 8 lines gives 37, 44 and 34. We do not rank the three on it.

Lucchese's 241 lines run 102 positive, 67 mixed and 72 negative, and 28 of its 38 durability lines are positive. 18 of its 67 value lines, including 10 of the 23 negative ones, come from one thread about price. Take that thread out and quality control leads the negatives, 21 to 13. Commenters also claim cardboard welts and chrome-tan leather at Tecovas and Celastic heel counters at Ariat Bench Made and Tecovas; those are claims, not catalog facts.

Do they run big or small?

Tecovas and Lucchese say true to size, Ariat's pages show a consumer gauge that reads true to size, and owners are split. Lucchese says its boots run true to size but a western boot may run slightly smaller than your dress shoe size, and its Luke page says a half size down. Ariat's gauge reads true to size on 17 of 18 listings, while four Zappos review lines say to order smaller.

Fit lines read 18 (6/6/6) for Ariat, 31 (7/16/8) for Tecovas and 38 (18/9/11) for Lucchese. An owner on Reddit's r/cowboyboots wrote: "I need a half size larger than my perfectly fitting Ariats for Lucchese". One commenter wrote that Ariat run large and that Lucchese get thin around the instep. See how cowboy boots should fit and the shoe width chart.

Which one should you pick?

Pick by budget first, then by what the page states about the welt, the sole and the width.

Pick Ariat if

  • You want the lowest list price of the three: 7 of 18 listings list under $200, down to $99.95 for a women's style. One of the seven names a welt and zero state a leather outsole; the welted, leather-soled men's boots start at $249.95.
  • You want the longest return window of the three, 90 days against 30.

Pick Tecovas if

  • You want a welt and a leather sole in the middle: 8 of the 24 listings name a welt on the product page, state a leather outsole and list from $300 to $399.99.
  • You wear a large size: 18 of 24 listings list size 15, against 4 of 18 at Ariat and 1 of 12 at Lucchese.

Pick Lucchese if

  • You want ostrich or alligator: Lucchese lists 4, from $545 to $7,295.
  • You plan to keep the pair for years and want a maker that repairs soles and heels: 28 of 38 durability lines are positive.

Skip it if

  • Ariat: you need a stated welt on every pair, since 6 of 18 state none.
  • Tecovas: you want a leather sole on every pair, since 7 of 24 list rubber, hybrid or Vibram, or you plan to resole at a cobbler and keep the warranty.
  • Lucchese: you shop under $495, or new-pair quality control is your worry, since 22 of 42 quality-control lines are negative.

If none of the three fits: what we make

Bespoke Western makes and sells Alvies, Hevias and Olsen-Stelzer boots, so read this section as a maker's note. The Lamar fits the entry rule: a men's cowhide boot on a ¾ Goodyear welt with a leather outsole, in D and EE, made in León, Mexico. To me, Alvies is the way in for a new boot buyer: bold, a little edgy, made for the night out in tighter jeans and a t-shirt rather than for the traditional cowboy.

Boot Price Construction Outsole Widths
Ariat Bench Made Younger (bison) $249.95 Channeled Goodyear leather welt Butyl leather sole (eleven-iron or nine-iron per the page) D, EE
Tecovas The Dean (goat) $295 3/4 Goodyear welt Leather outsole D-Average, EE-Wide
Lucchese Majestic Roper (goat) $495 Single-stitched welt Leather D, EE
Alvies The Lamar $390 ¾ Goodyear welt 100% leather outsole, midsole and insole, plus a cork filler and a layer of EVA (Alvies FAQ) D, EE
Hevias The Heritage Boot - American Bison (Copper) $385 Goodyear welted Not stated Not stated

At $390 The Lamar sits above Ariat's $249.95 and Tecovas's $295 entry boots and below Lucchese's $495. House prices checked October 16, 2026; the Ariat, Tecovas and Lucchese prices October 11, 2026.

Hevias The Heritage Boot (Copper) is American bison, Goodyear welted and made in León, at $385. Tecovas lists 4 bison boots at $395 and Ariat 8 from $249.95 to $349.95. Leather grade, counters and finishing are differences the catalog cannot see.

Our refund policy gives full-price items 30 days from delivery to exchange for full credit or return for a full refund.

Where the house trails: Ariat gives 90 days to our 30, and Tecovas and Lucchese publish repair routes. Alvies' limited lifetime warranty covers the original owner against manufacturing defects, excludes sole or heel wear, and Alvies does not resole or reheel boots. For a boot cut to your own measurements, Olsen-Stelzer starts at $1,500. See Olsen-Stelzer, the Alvies and Tecovas comparison and all our boots.

How we counted

The counts cover the 54 listings in our catalog, a sample of each brand's range, from product pages saved October 11, 2026; the six Ariat pages with no construction were also read in a browser on October 12. A listing is a product page; the two Ariat Heritage R Toe colors, which count once, differ by $10.

To me, construction is the value of a boot: a well-built pair, looked after, lasts a lifetime. Fit comes first, though: I think a boot can be built to fit comfortably out of the box, and a good pair settles in like a good baseball glove.

The 553 lines come from 75 saved sources: 60 Reddit threads we read in October 2026, plus press and store reviews. Lines from 13 of the 60 Reddit threads carry post dates, from 2016 to 2026. Our count ends at line 1,338 of the community file, saved by October 12, 2026; later additions are left out. An owner is a writer whose line says they own the boot, and anyone else is a commenter or a reviewer.

The three brands were mined from different threads, so the columns are not like-for-like samples. The versus tallies count lines we tagged by hand, so read them as floors. BootSpy is supported by readers and may earn a commission, and we cite it for what its author says about Ariat. Bespoke Western makes and sells Alvies, Hevias and Olsen-Stelzer boots.

Quick answers

Is Lucchese worth the extra money over Tecovas?

Lucchese's entry boot is $495 against $295 at Tecovas. Both name a welt and a leather sole on the pages we saved, and 8 of the 9 lines favoring Lucchese are about quality.

Is Ariat better than Tecovas?

Bench Made overlaps Tecovas on welt, leather sole and León. Of the versus lines we tagged, 13 favor Ariat and 5 favor Tecovas, and one commenter can write several. The holds-up shares move with the sample, so we call no winner.

How do Lucchese boots fit compared to Ariat?

Owners point both ways: a 2016 comment needed a half size larger in Lucchese than in Ariat, a 2021 comment a half size bigger in Ariat, and Lucchese's Luke page says a half size down. Try both on in your usual size and check the width.

Bottom line

Buy Ariat for the lowest entry price and the longest return window of the three, Tecovas for a welted, leather-soled boot in the middle, and Lucchese when you will pay from $495 for a maker that repairs soles and heels.
