How Much Do Cowboy Boots Cost? What Each Price Tier Buys

|George Frederick Baker, Sr.

The build, the hide and the hand work set the price.

The boot-review site BootSpy puts a good pair of cowboy boots at $250 to $600, and Texas Monthly writes that custom-boot prices start in the four-digit category and can go up to $15,000. The sources below tie price to three things: how the sole is attached, the hide, and how much work is done by hand.

How much do cowboy boots cost?

BootSpy puts a good pair of cowboy boots at $250 to $600, and Texas Monthly says custom-boot prices start in the four-digit category. BootSpy (updated November 2024) writes, "A good pair of cowboy boots will cost anywhere between $250-$600." Texas Monthly (August 2024), in a feature on custom wedding boots, writes that "custom-boot prices start firmly in the four-digit category and can go up to $15,000."

Each price in the last column is attributed to the outlet that published it.

Olsen-Stelzer hide table: starts at $1,500 for cowhide, shoulder, goat or buffalo and reaches $5,500 for alligator belly (foot and top)

Why are cowboy boots so expensive?

The sources tie a cowboy boot's price to three costs: the sole build, the hide and the hand work. Permanent Style (May 2026) notes that cowboy boots "are still largely handmade in small workshops throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Mexico and beyond." Stitchdown adds that crafting footwear by hand "takes an incredible amount of time and requires expensive equipment and materials."

On where boots are made, the Houston Chronicle (updated January 2023) calls León, Mexico, "a city famous for leather-working," and BootSpy writes, "I don't think there's a difference in craftsmanship between American and Mexican-made cowboy boots." Alvies and Hevias both say they handcraft their boots in León.

Does construction change the price?

Yes: gluing costs the least and welting the most of the three builds Myrqvist's journal compares. Stridewise calls gluing "the cheapest way to attach the upper to an outsole," and Myrqvist's journal says, "more seams mean more work: welted costs the most to buy, Blake sits in the middle, cemented the least."

BootSpy called a dozen cobblers across the USA and found an average of $140 for a new sole and $250 for a full rebuild, and it says a cowboy-boot resole will probably cost between $175 and $225. The Goodyear welt guide shows how the three builds differ and how to spot a welt.

How much does the hide add?

On Olsen-Stelzer's published price table, the hide sets the starting price: $1,500 for cowhide, shoulder, goat or buffalo, rising to $5,500 for alligator belly (foot and top). The table below samples its rows, read October 4, 2026, as reference values only.

Hide selection (Olsen-Stelzer) Starting at
Cowhide, shoulder, goat, buffalo $1,500
Smooth ostrich (foot and top) $1,750
Caiman belly, kangaroo top $2,500
Full quill ostrich (foot and top) $3,000
Nile croc (foot and top) $3,500
Alligator belly (foot and top) $5,500

BootSpy says exotic leathers are "far less common" and that "fewer tanneries are willing or able to do exotic leathers." The exotic boot decision guide compares the hides, and the python and Teju lizard guides cover two exotics in the house line.

What do custom cowboy boots cost?

Olsen-Stelzer, the house's made-to-measure maker, publishes a starting price of $1,500 for cowhide, shoulder, goat or buffalo, and Texas Monthly says custom-boot prices start in the four-digit category. Olsen-Stelzer says every custom pair will vary. After you fill out its custom order form, it says it will get back to you with an exact price and estimated delivery date, and it requires a 50% non-refundable deposit to start any pair.

The custom cowboy boots guide walks through the order form, and bespoke vs made-to-measure boots explains what each word promises. Olsen-Stelzer's own price table carries the current figures.

What are the most expensive cowboy boots?

Of the sources cited here, Texas Monthly gives the highest figure: in a feature on custom wedding boots, it writes that custom-boot prices can go up to $15,000. Olsen-Stelzer's table sets the starting price by hide, lists inlays at $100 to $1,000 and initials at $40 each, and lists custom shafts, heels, toes, pulls and logos as additional.

Which price tier should you buy?

If you plan to keep your boots for years, start with a welted boot in the good-pair range.

  • Pick a glued-sole boot if you want a light, low-cost pair and plan to replace it rather than rebuild it.
  • Pick a welted boot if you want a pair you can resole. BootSpy says a cowboy-boot resole will probably cost $175 to $225, so it only makes sense on boots that originally cost $400 or above.
  • Pick an exotic hide if the skin is the point. BootSpy says that for boots beyond $600 you are usually paying for a type of leather like an exotic, which "may be worthwhile depending on your budget."
  • Pick made-to-measure if standard sizes miss your foot or you want to choose the leather, stitching, toe and heel.

Quick answers

How do Bespoke Western's own boots fit these tiers?

Alvies says all of its boots are handcrafted with a three-quarter Goodyear welt, Hevias says every welted Hevias boot uses the Goodyear welt method and is fully resolable, and Olsen-Stelzer is the made-to-measure tier. Each product page shows its live price.

How much does it cost to resole cowboy boots?

How long does a custom pair take?

Olsen-Stelzer's history page says delivery times are currently 8 to 12 weeks, and its homepage says 2 to 3 months in most cases. After you fill out its custom order form, Olsen-Stelzer says it will get back to you with an estimated delivery date.
