Boots for a night on the dance floor.
For indoor floors, Ariat, El General, Chisos and the Tulsa Country Western Dance Association point to leather soles; Ariat puts the heel at 1 to 2 inches. Our top pick is the Chisos No. 2: a veg-tanned leather sole, a 1.625-inch heel and D and EE widths, at $595. For women, the Chisos No. 4 and the Alvies Guadalupe and Rainey list heels of 1.5 to 1.75 inches.
We checked 130 cowboy boots from 22 brands that list both an outsole and a heel height (catalog as of October 12, 2026), and 89 of them list a leather outsole and a heel of 1 to 2 inches. Prices were checked October 11, 2026, and Alvies prices October 16, 2026.

Not stated means the maker pages we saved do not say.
Top pick: Chisos No. 2
The No. 2 is an 11-inch cowhide boot with a refined square toe, a veg-tanned leather sole, a 1.625-inch heel and D and EE widths, handcrafted in Guanajuato, Mexico, at $595.
Chisos lists it in its Dance Boots collection.
A reviewer on Chisos's No. 2 Ostrich page wrote, "Great fit and very comfortable, especially after a long night of dancing."
George's take: I think construction is the value of a boot: a well-built pair, looked after, lasts a lifetime.
Pros
- Goodyear construction with a leather channel welt, fully resolable
- A 1.625-inch heel inside both Ariat's and El General's ranges
- Rated 4.9 from 841 reviews, the most of the eight Chisos Dance Boots in our catalog (the No. 1 has 450)
Watch out for
- At $595 it ties the No. 7 for the highest price in the men's table
Skip it if you want a lower price. Justin's Jackson costs $204.95.
Leather-soled house boot for men: Alvies The Shoal Creek
The Shoal Creek is a 13-inch cowhide boot with a 100% leather sole plus a "cork filler" and "a layer of EVA" (Alvies' FAQ), a 1.5-inch stacked leather heel with a non-slip rubber bottom, and D and EE widths. It costs $390 (price checked October 16, 2026). See The Shoal Creek.
Alvies's product copy lists "riding, western fashion, dancing, work" among its uses. The Comal, Lamar, 6th Street and Congress share its sole, heel and widths; the dancing line is why we feature the Shoal Creek. On the toe, Alvies calls it "our version of a square-toe boot", while our own product page lists "Signature Wide Snip Toe", so check the photos.
An owner of four Alvies pairs, two of them Shoal Creeks, wrote that the boots did "take a month of wearing to break in".
George's take: I can tell you Alvies boots are all Goodyear welted.
Pros
- A resolable ¾ Goodyear welt, made in León, Mexico
- A Limited Lifetime Warranty against manufacturing defects that excludes sole and heel wear, covers the original owner and carries a $19.99 replacement fee
Watch out for
- Alvies does not resole or reheel boots
Skip it if you want a traditional honky-tonk boot. George says Alvies "could be a honky-tonk boot, but it's not your honky-tonk boot".
Most widths: Justin Jackson 10" Roper
Justin's Jackson is a 10-inch roper with a hand-nailed leather outsole and a 1-inch roper heel, in B, D, E, EE and EEE widths, at $204.95. Its five widths are the most of the 85 leather-soled boots with a 1-to-2-inch heel whose pages list widths.
An owner on r/cowboyboots had Justin ropers whose leather soles "took 10 years to finally wear through".
Pros
- A full welt with a single row stitch
- A 1-inch heel, the low end of Ariat's range
Watch out for
- The Justin page we saved states no country of origin
Skip it if you want a heel nearer the middle of the range. The Shoal Creek lists 1.5 inches.
Rubber-soled pick for outdoor floors: Ariat Hybrid Rancher
Ariat's Hybrid Rancher is an 11-inch full-grain leather boot with a rubber outsole, a 1.5-inch Horseman heel, a wide square toe and D and EE widths, at $199.95.
Ariat's guide calls rubber "the safer choice" on grass, concrete and gravel, and El General says smooth rubber suits outdoor venues, though it "may resist a pivot more than leather".
It is the one rubber sole in the men's table, and Ariat's guide also lists the Taytum X Toe and the Rambler for outdoor dancing.
A dancer on r/LineDancing wrote, "Ariat boots have a rubber outsole. They can be harder to dance in because they don't slide on the dance floor."
Pros
- Free returns within 90 days on unworn, non-final-sale pairs
Watch out for
- The Ariat page we saved states no welt or construction
Skip it if your floor is wood or vinyl, where Ariat recommends leather. The Jackson has a leather sole.
Women's pick from Chisos's Dance Boots: Chisos No. 4
The No. 4 is a 14-inch cowhide snip-toe boot with a leather sole, a 1.5-inch stacked leather heel and a B width, handcrafted in Mexico, at $745. Chisos files it and the No. 3 under Dance Boots; the No. 3 has the same sole and heel in a 10-inch shaft at $595.
A reviewer on Chisos's No. 3 page wrote that "the heel lifting is probably a little worse at first than some other boot brands".
Pros
- Rated 4.93 from 71 reviews on Chisos's page
Watch out for
- At $745 it has the highest price in the women's table
- It comes in a B width only
Skip it if you want a lower price. Tecovas's Annie, a leather-soled boot with a 2-inch heel, costs $375.
Tall house boot for women: Alvies The Guadalupe
The Guadalupe is a 12.75-inch full cowhide boot with a 100% leather sole plus a "cork filler" and "a layer of EVA" (Alvies' FAQ), a 1.75-inch stacked leather heel with a non-slip rubber bottom and a B width. It costs $365 (price checked October 16, 2026). See The Guadalupe.
Alvies's FAQ gives its women's boots a 1.5-inch heel, while the Guadalupe and Rainey product pages list 1.75 inches, the number in our table.
One reviewer on our product page wrote, "I barely wear the new boots because they've been so challenging to break in."
George's take: I think a long shaft, a raised heel and no laces make a first-time buyer wonder how a foot gets in.
Pros
- A resolable ¾ Goodyear welt, made in León, Mexico
- Rated 4.9 from 96 reviews on our page
Watch out for
- It comes in a B width only
Skip it if you need a wider width. Ariat's Casanova X Toe lists B and C.
Ankle-zip house boot for women: Alvies The Rainey
The Rainey is a 7-inch zip-up ankle boot with a 100% leather sole plus a "cork filler" and "a layer of EVA" (Alvies' FAQ), a 1.75-inch stacked leather heel with a non-slip rubber bottom and a B width. It costs $330 (price checked October 16, 2026). See The Rainey.
Alvies's copy lists "two-stepping at a honky-tonk" among the places it is a fit for.
The Trinity lists the same 7-inch shaft and 1.75-inch heel, with 37 reviews on our page to the Rainey's 286, the most of any Alvies boot in our catalog.
A Trinity reviewer, on a boot Alvies says shares the Rainey's last, wrote, "Easy to dance in!"
George's take: I think the first worry is that a boot will be uncomfortable and hard to get on and off.
Pros
- A side zipper that Alvies lists "for easy on/off"
- A resolable ¾ Goodyear welt, made in León, Mexico
Watch out for
- Reviewers on our page with a high instep report trouble getting the boots on and off, and one could not zip the left boot.
- A 7-inch shaft sits below the 10 inches or more that Ariat says most dancers choose
Skip it if you want a tall boot. The Guadalupe stands 12.75 inches.
Ariat's indoor pick, checked: Casanova X Toe
Ariat's guide lists the Casanova X Toe under indoor dancing. Ariat's page lists a hand-nailed veg tan leather sole, a 2.5-inch New West heel and a 16-inch shaft, at $279.95.
The same guide puts the best heel for line dancing "between one and two inches", so the boot's heel sits half an inch above the top of Ariat's own range.
An owner on r/cowboyboots wrote about Ariat's Casanova boots, "My Ariat Cassanovas were uncomfortable enough that I ended up selling them."
Pros
- A hand-nailed veg tan leather sole on a resoleable Goodyear leather welt
- B and C widths
Watch out for
- A 2.5-inch heel sits above Ariat's own range
Skip it if you want a heel inside Ariat's range. The Guadalupe lists 1.75 inches.
What should you look for in boots for line dancing?
Ariat's guide points to three things: a sole that suits your floor, a heel of 1 to 2 inches and a fit that holds your heel while you dance. For room, see the Widths and Shaft columns, best square toe cowboy boots and snip toe boots.
Leather or rubber sole for line dancing?
Leather suits an indoor dance floor and rubber suits outdoor ground, according to Ariat, which says leather soles "make it easier to glide, shuffle, and spin" on wood or vinyl. Chisos says rubber soles give more grip but "make slides and pivots feel sticky".
El General calls a traditional leather outsole "the classic choice" on wood, laminate or smooth concrete, and the Tulsa Country Western Dance Association says it does "encourage you to wear leather-soled footwear".
Four lines in two line-dancing threads we saved favor leather on the dance floor, three of them in one thread, and none favors rubber. A commenter on r/cowboyboots wrote, "Rubber soles are bit too grippy on a lot of dance floors."
A commenter who bought leather soles "exclusively for dancing at the bar" said they "started falling apart at the 6 month mark". In a Tecovas sole-wear thread, a commenter who dances once or twice a week wrote that none of that wear had happened in almost a year.
What heel height is best for line dancing?
Between 1 and 2 inches, says Ariat, while El General says most dancers do well in "a heel around 1 to 1.75 inches".
Of the 130 cowboy boots in our catalog that list an outsole and a heel, 126 sit at 1 to 2 inches, none below 1 inch and 4 above 2 inches, so the heel is rarely the deciding factor.
Of the 89 leather-soled boots in that range, 81 sit at 1.75 inches or lower, inside El General's range. All eight Chisos boots in our catalog that Chisos files under Dance Boots list heels of 1.25 to 1.625 inches. See cowboy boot heel types for heel names.
How should dancing boots fit, and what size do I order?
Order the size that keeps your heel in place when you dance: Ariat says it should "slip slightly when walking but not when dancing".
Alvies's sizing page says women's boots run a little big and to order a half-size down, while the Guadalupe and Rainey product pages say true to size, with a half-size down for high arches.
Reviewers on those two pages disagree: some ordered a half size down, others kept their usual size or went up. Read the reviews and ask before you order. See how cowboy boots should fit and whether heel slip is normal.
How we picked
We filtered on sole, then heel height; shaft, toe, widths, construction and a dated price separate the finalists. One rule sets every label: it names the fact that earns the slot, and the section names the boots that tie on it or come close. Top pick is the Chisos Dance Boot with the most reviews; Most widths is a count.
Of the 130 cowboy boots with an outsole and a heel in our catalog, 93 list leather, 20 rubber or another non-leather sole and 17 a hybrid, combination or unclear sole. Of the 89 leather-soled boots in the 1-to-2-inch range, 11 state a rubber heel cap or lift, and Chisos calls a leather sole with a rubber-capped heel the ideal dance boot.
Sole and heel rules come from Ariat, El General, Chisos and the Tulsa Country Western Dance Association, all saved October 11, 2026. Dancer lines come from Reddit and product-page reviews.
Bespoke Western sells Alvies, Hevias and Olsen-Stelzer boots, and three of the eight picks are Alvies. Alvies's heel listings say "non-slip rubber bottom", its own words; the pages we saved do not say whether that is a cap, so we do not count it as one. The Hevias pages we saved list no outsole or heel-height spec, so no Hevias boot is counted here. The Cowboy Boot Index 2026 has the wider catalog.
Quick answers
Do you need cowboy boots to line dance?
Ariat says you technically do not need them, and the Tulsa association says boots are the tradition and "they certainly aren't required". For other footwear, see line dancing for beginners.
Can I wear ankle boots to line dance?
Yes. Ariat says shaft height is flexible, and El General calls Western ankle boots a smart option for casual dance nights and beginners.
Can you resole a leather-soled dance boot?
Yes, on a welted boot. Chisos calls the No. 2 fully rebuildable and resolable, and Alvies says the ¾ Goodyear welt on the Shoal Creek, Guadalupe and Rainey means they can be resoled, though Alvies itself does not resole or reheel boots. See our Goodyear welt guide.
What are the most comfortable women's cowboy boots for line dancing?
We filter on sole, heel and widths, not comfort. In the women's table, the Chisos No. 3 and No. 4, the Alvies Guadalupe and Rainey and the Tecovas Annie pair a leather sole with a heel of 1.5 to 2 inches. For comfort, see most comfortable cowboy boots.
Bottom line
Ariat's rule: leather soles for wood or vinyl, rubber for grass, gravel and concrete, and a heel of 1 to 2 inches. Then check width and size, and price last. Start with the Chisos No. 2, or with the Shoal Creek, Guadalupe or Rainey for a house boot.
