Best overall: Chisos No. 2
The No. 2 is an 11-inch cowhide boot with a refined square toe, handcrafted in Guanajuato, Mexico, at $595. Chisos's own page rates it 4.9 from 841 reviews and lists hand-lasting on Chisos Signature Lasts.
An owner on Reddit's r/cowboyboots wrote, "My feet never get tired or hurt", after 14-16 hours a day on concrete and tile.
George's take: Fit comes first for me. The No. 2 comes in D and EE.
Pros
- Goodyear construction with hand-lasting
- A veg-tanned leather sole, fully resolable
Watch out for
- At $595 it is the highest price of the ten
Skip it if you want a lower price. Justin's Austin costs $249.95.
Best known: Tecovas The Doc
The Doc is a 12-inch goat boot with a broad square toe and a signature toe bug, $375 in Cafe Goat. Tecovas's page shows 4.8 from 6,538 reviews (checked October 16, 2026), the most of the five pages we saved with a review count. Tecovas lists a 12-month limited warranty.
Tecovas owners on r/cowboyboots split on durability (brand lines, not Doc reviews): one has had theirs "about 3 years and they are still in great shape", and another saw sole stitching that "came undone and frayed within two weeks".
George's take: To me, construction is the value of a boot.
Pros
- A ¾ Goodyear welt on a leather outsole
- A resoling program through NuShoe
Watch out for
- The upper is goat, not cowhide
Skip it if you want cowhide or a taller shaft. The Doc stands 12 inches; four others stand 13.
Best lifetime warranty: Alvies The Shoal Creek
The Shoal Creek is a 13-inch cowhide boot with a 1.5-inch stacked leather heel, made in León, Mexico, per Alvies' FAQ. It costs $390 (price checked October 16, 2026). See The Shoal Creek.
It carries a Limited Lifetime Warranty against manufacturing defects, the longest stated on the pages we saved, but it excludes sole and heel wear (Alvies does not resole or reheel boots), covers the original owner and replaces a defective boot once for a $19.99 shipping and handling fee. Tecovas lists 12 months, Justin, Tony Lama and Ariat one year, Rios and Anderson Bean none universal, and the Chisos and HYER pages we saved state no warranty.
Returns run 30 days from delivery: full-price items can be exchanged for full credit or returned for a full refund, and promotional items get exchange or store credit only. The Shoal Creek's product page adds "Free size exchanges for 30 days".
On the toe, Alvies calls the Shoal Creek "our version of a square-toe boot". The feature list on our own product page reads "Signature Wide Snip Toe".
One owner on r/cowboyboots wrote it did "take a month of wearing to break in"; a reviewer on our product page "wore them the first time 10 hours straight right out of the box".
George's take: I can tell you Alvies boots are all Goodyear welted.
Pros
- A Limited Lifetime Warranty that excludes sole and heel wear, covers the original owner and carries a $19.99 replacement fee
- A ¾ Goodyear welt a cobbler can resole
Watch out for
- 5.0 from 23 reviews is a small sample
Skip it if price leads. Justin's Austin costs $249.95.
Best-reviewed of the saved pages under $400: HYER Sawyer
The Sawyer is a 13-inch boot with a tan oiled shrunken-shoulder vamp, a vintage goat shaft and a broad square toe, $390.
HYER's page rates it 4.9 from 524 reviews, the highest of the three boots under $400 whose saved pages show over 100 reviews, ahead of Dan Post at 4.6 and Tecovas at 4.8 (October 16, 2026).
Commenters on r/cowboyboots split: one wrote "My Sawyers have seen quite a bit of saddle time and still holding up well", and another wrote that their husband's pair of the same boots was "kind of deteriorating at the bottom" after about 3 or 4 months.
George's take: I think the first worry is that a boot will be uncomfortable and hard to get on and off.
Pros
- A Goodyear welt, double-stitched
- An oiled leather outsole
Watch out for
- The HYER pages we saved state no origin, warranty or resole
Skip it if you want a stated origin or warranty. Justin's Austin lists the USA and one year.
Best made in the USA under $250: Justin Austin
Justin's Austin is an 11-inch pull-on in premium full-grain leather with a square toe, made in the USA (El Paso, Texas) with global parts, at $249.95.
It is the lowest-priced of the three boots in the ten with a stated US origin, ahead of Anderson Bean at $400 and Rios at $549.95.
Other Justin models: A roper owner on r/cowboyboots had leather soles that "took 10 years to finally wear through", while another wrote that Justins "run really narrow on the outsole".
George's take: Under jeans a short shaft reads like a tall one; what shows is the leather.
Pros
- A full welt with a double-row stitch
- A leather outsole in B, D and EE
Watch out for
- The one-year warranty covers the first purchaser
Skip it if you want a lifetime warranty. Alvies lists a Limited Lifetime Warranty that excludes sole and heel wear.
Best for big feet: Dan Post Franklin
The Franklin is the only one of the ten sold past size 15: sizes 7 to 18 in D and EW, at $289.95. It has a broad square toe and an 11-inch shaft, and Dan Post's page rates it 4.6 from 117 reviews. Dan Post's product-page Q&A answers, signed Store Owner, say its traditional western styles are made in Mexico, the Franklin is "warrantied against manufacturing defects" (December 25, 2021) and, on the Alamosa page, "Our warranty is up to one year." (February 5, 2024).
Dan Post boots in general: An owner on r/cowboyboots wrote that they "feel so good right out of the box", while another had to get their "heels reglue every 6 months or less".
George's take: I think a good pair is extremely comfortable once it has the right fit and is broken in.
Pros
- A double-stitched welt
- A 60-day return window for new, unworn pairs
Watch out for
- The outsole is TPU and leather
Skip it if you want an all-leather sole. Eight of the ten boots list one. See wide feet and sizes 14 and 15.
Best cheap with 90-day returns: Ariat Sport Outdoor
Ariat's Sport Outdoor Cowboy Boot is the lowest-priced of the ten at $179.95, with a wide square toe, a full-grain leather upper and an 11-inch shaft.
Ariat gives free returns within 90 days for unworn, non-final-sale pairs, the longest window of the eight makers whose return terms we saved (Dan Post is next at 60 days), and a one-year warranty on online purchases.
Ariat boots in general: BootSpy reports that many owners of Ariat's less expensive boots found they "didn't last much beyond a year or 18 months of regular wear".
George's take: Cheap, mass-market boots are not my market, so I do not rate them here.
Pros
- Free returns for 90 days on unworn pairs
Watch out for
- A rubber outsole and a synthetic air mesh lining
Skip it if you want a stated welt and a leather outsole. Justin's Austin lists both at $249.95.
Best narrow square: Rios of Mercedes R9024
The R9024 is the only one of the ten whose maker calls the toe narrow: Rios lists Cutter (Narrow Square). It is a 13-inch boot with a steer hide vamp and a horse hide top, handmade in Mercedes, Texas. It costs $549.95 at the dealer Baker Shoe. Baker Shoe tags this listing "BTO 9-12 Month", so ask the dealer about lead time for your size.
Rios says each pair is hand-lasted, hand-stitched, hand-pegged and hand-finished. Rios runs a factory recrafting service of 60 to 90 days.
Rios boots in general: An owner on r/cowboyboots wrote, "Construction is flawless", and called them the most comfortable boots they had worn. Dressier outfit? See cowboy boots with a suit.
George's take: I think a well-built boot, looked after over time, lasts a lifetime.
Pros
- A single welt sole stitch on a leather outsole
Watch out for
- Rios states no universal warranty, so repairs go through the dealer
Skip it if you want to buy direct or want a written warranty. Tecovas lists 12 months.
Best first exotic: Tony Lama Blaine
The Blaine is the only ostrich boot in the ten: an ostrich vamp on a wide square toe with an 11-inch shaft, at $329.95. Its warranty and returns follow Justin Brands terms.
Tony Lama boots in general: An owner on r/cowboyboots said Tony Lamas "needed to be broken in but are now very comfortable".
George's take: I think people who make the leap into boots want it flashy, a boot that tells a story, a one of one.
Pros
- A ¾ welt on a leather outsole
Watch out for
- The ostrich is on the vamp only
Skip it if you want ostrich beyond the vamp or a stated origin. See our exotic boot decision guide.
Best bison: Anderson Bean S1116
The S1116 is a 13-inch boot with a Mike Tyson bison vamp and a DB toe that Anderson Bean labels Wide Square, handcrafted in Mercedes, Texas. It costs $400 at the dealer Texas Boot Company.
Anderson Bean runs a factory recrafting service of 60 to 90 days.
Anderson Bean boots in general: An owner on r/cowboyboots wore theirs "as daily wear for over 15 years".
George's take: I think you can re-sole or re-cobble a well-built boot as much as you want.
Pros
- A double welt sole stitch on a leather outsole
Watch out for
- Sizes stop at 14
- Anderson Bean states no universal warranty, so repairs go through the dealer
Skip it if you need a size 15. Dan Post goes to 18.
How we picked
To me, construction is the value of a boot: a well-built pair, looked after, lasts a lifetime, and a welted boot can be resoled as often as you like.
Facts come from each maker's pages, plus two dealer pages that supply the Rios and Anderson Bean prices, sizes and widths, all saved October 11, 2026, unless dated otherwise. Owner lines come from Reddit's r/cowboyboots, maker-page reviews and BootSpy.
Bespoke Western makes and sells Alvies, Hevias and Olsen-Stelzer boots. One of the ten picks is ours: The Shoal Creek. The Cowboy Boot Index 2026 has the wider catalog.
What should you look for in square toe cowboy boots?
Look for a welted sole, a toe label you understand and a width that fits your foot. Nine of the ten name a welt, and all ten come in a wider width, EE or EW. A welt lets a cobbler resole the boot; see our Goodyear welt guide.
What are square toe cowboy boots called?
Square toe cowboy boots go by several names on the pages we saved: square, broad square, wide square and narrow square, plus house labels such as Cutter, Milan and DB.
Of the 21 brands with a square toe entry in our catalog, Cody James, Dan Post, Double-H, HYER, Nocona and Tecovas say broad square, and Anderson Bean, Ariat, Corral, Double-H, Justin, Lucchese, Rios of Mercedes and Tony Lama say wide square. Eight other brands use plain square, and ten brands use more than one label.
Even one maker mixes names: Rios of Mercedes lists the R9002 as Milan (Wide Square) and the R9024 as Cutter (Narrow Square).
Are square toe boots better for your feet?
A square toe usually gives your toes more room than a round or pointed toe, but width and size still decide the fit. See our guide to whether cowboy boots are comfortable.
Quick answers
Are square toe cowboy boots still in style?
Yes. Ariat calls the square toe a popular choice for modern cowboy boot styles.
Do real cowboys wear square toe boots?
Some do. Ariat calls the square toe ideal for work and casual wear, and La Herradura calls it one of the most popular choices for men who wear boots for work and ranch activities. BootSpy adds a trade-off: most cowboy boots have a more rounded or pointed toe, and square toes can be more difficult to work in because they are bulkier.
Do square toe boots run big?
Alvies, Chisos, Dan Post, HYER and Tecovas each point you to your usual size. Owners differ. One Chisos No. 2 owner said the "narrow square toe" made it run longer than they were used to.
How is a square toe different from a round or snip toe?
A square toe is more squared off than a round toe, while a snip toe starts like a pointed toe with the very end snipped off. See cowboy boot toe shapes and snip toe boots.
Bottom line
Fit first, then construction: I think a boot can be built to fit comfortably out of the box, and a good pair settles in like a good baseball glove. Start with the Chisos No. 2, Justin's Austin for a USA-made welt at $249.95, or the Dan Post Franklin for sizes past 15. Take The Shoal Creek for the Limited Lifetime Warranty, which excludes sole and heel wear.
