León boots in the late sun.
Tecovas The Cartwright is the most-reviewed León-stated cowhide boot in our catalog: $375, 4.8 on 15,009 reviews (October 16), with a 3/4 Goodyear welt and D and EE widths. Nine brands in our catalog say their boots are made in León, Mexico, and they say it in different places. Prices checked October 11, 2026 (Alvies and Hevias October 16).
This guide sets each maker's exact made-in words beside dated prices, welts, outsoles and widths, and marks product-page lines apart from brand-page lines. We compared 73 Mexico-stating boots from 11 brands and counted owner reports for the picks.
For where every other brand makes its boots, read our guide to where cowboy boots are made. For the wider field, see the best cowboy boot brands. The Mexican cowboy's own story is in our vaquero guide. This page covers Western boots, not the long pointed-toe botas picudas style, which sits outside our catalog.

Which brands say their cowboy boots are made in León?
Alvies, Ariat's Bench Made line, Hevias, Old Gringo, Rujo, Soto Boots, Stetson and Tecovas say León on their own pages, and nine brands in our catalog name it somewhere. Of the 57 León-stated boots, 20 get the line from their own product page and the other 37 from a brand page. A product-page line speaks for that boot, and a brand-page line speaks for the brand. Alvies' own site also puts a general line on 10 of the 11 boot pages we saved: "Built by the best hands in Leon, Mexico (aka, the world)."
| Brand | Boots | Exact words on the page | Where it says so |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hevias | 4 | "Handcrafted in León, Mexico by generational artisans" | Each product page |
| Rujo | 3 | "designed in Dallas, TX, handcrafted in León, Mexico" | Each product page |
| Ariat (Bench Made) | 8 | "Handcrafted in León, Mexico" ; "Handcrafted by artisans in León, Mexico" ; "Handcrafted by old-world boot makers in León, Mexico" ; "Handcrafted with the old-world artistry of León, Mexico" ; "Our James boot combines León, Mexico's old-world boot making" ; "executed by bootmakers in León, Mexico" ; "handcrafted by artisan boot makers in León, Mexico" | Each product page, worded style by style |
| Soto Boots (product page) | 1 | "handcrafted in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico" | Product page |
| Stetson | 1 | "Handmade in León, Mexico" | Product page |
| Chisos | 8 | "Handcrafted in Guanajuato, Mexico" ; "Handcrafted in Mexico" | Each product page |
| Mezcalero Boots (women's) | 3 | "100% handcrafted in Mexico" | Each product page; country only |
| Dan Post | 5 | "A: Mexico" ; "made in Mexico" | Product page Q&A: 3 Store Owner, 2 Verified Buyer answers |
| Tecovas (product page) | 3 | "Handcrafted in León, Mexico" | Each product page |
| Soto Boots (brand page) | 2 | "Every pair of Soto Boots is handcrafted in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico" | Brand page: our-story page |
| Alvies | 11 | "handcrafted by one of the oldest and most respected bootmakers in the world in León, Mexico" | Brand page: Alvies FAQ |
| Tecovas (brand page) | 20 | "Our heritage-made cowboy boots are handcrafted in León, Mexico by generational bootmakers" | Brand page: Tecovas help center |
| Old Gringo | 4 | "every pair of Old Gringo Boots, skillfully fashioned by our seasoned team in Leon, Mexico." | Brand page: home page |
Chisos names Guanajuato on 6 boots and Mexico alone on 2. The five Dan Post Q&A answers and Mezcalero's product pages give the country only. On its our-story page the Mezcalero brand says its artisans handmake every single boot in León, México.

Prices checked October 11, 2026 (Alvies and Hevias October 16).
Alvies' León line sits on its FAQ and the Cartwright's on the Tecovas help center, so we count both as brand-level.
Most-reviewed León-stated cowhide boot: Tecovas The Cartwright
The Cartwright is a 12-inch cowhide boot with a round toe and a 1.5-inch stacked angled heel, in sizes 7 to 15. Tecovas lists it at $375 with no marked-down price (price checked October 11, 2026).
On October 16, Tecovas showed 4.8 on 15,009 reviews; only Tecovas The Earl, a goat boot, had more (24,299) among León-stated boots in our catalog. Its León line sits on the Tecovas help center, so it is brand-level.
One owner on Reddit's r/cowboyboots wrote "Both pairs of my newer Cartwrights have a sloppy fit."
George's take: Fit comes first for me. A good pair is extremely comfortable once it fits and has settled in, like a good baseball glove.
Pros
- A leather outsole on a 3/4 Goodyear welt
- Free 30-day returns on unworn pairs not marked Final Sale
Watch out for
- A brand-level León line
- An owner reports a sloppy fit, quoted above
Skip it if price leads or you want a lifetime warranty. Soto H50030 lists a regular $179.95. The Lamar has a Limited Lifetime Warranty that excludes sole and heel wear, the Cartwright 12 months.
Lowest regular price with León on the product page: Soto H50030
Soto's men's snip toe, style H50030, is a 12-inch leather boot with a pointed snip toe, a 1.5-inch mid-heel and Goodyear welt construction, in sizes 7 to 13. Soto lists it at $149.95 against a regular $179.95 (price checked October 11, 2026). The regular $179.95 is the lowest regular price among León-stated boots whose own product page names León.
Its product page says "handcrafted in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico", so the line is product-level. The other two Soto boots in our catalog, H50049 and H4005, get it only from Soto's our-story page. The H50030 page states no outsole and no width.
Pros
- León named on the product page
- A Goodyear welt, per the product page
Watch out for
- Soto's size guide says its men's boots run large: size down half a size
Skip it if you need a stated outsole or width.
For more snip toes, see our snip toe boots guide.
Best for a lifetime warranty: Alvies The Lamar
The Lamar is a 13-inch cowhide boot with a J-toe and a 1.5-inch stacked leather heel, in D and EE, sizes 8 to 15. Alvies' warranty page gives it a Limited Lifetime Warranty against manufacturing defects that excludes sole and heel wear, covers the original owner and carries a $19.99 replacement fee, the only lifetime warranty among the three brands whose warranty we recorded (Alvies, Ariat and Tecovas). See The Lamar.
Its León line comes from Alvies' own site, in its FAQ, and our Lamar page is silent on where it is made. Today the Lamar is $390 (price checked October 16, 2026).
Alvies owner lines lean negative on Reddit: 20 of 33 are negative, with 7 on quality control, 6 on fit and 3 on service. Reviews on our own product pages split 16 positive, 11 negative and 5 mixed. Lamar fit lines in one Reddit thread include "very nicely at the ball of the foot and the instep" and "toe box is pretty narrow".
George's take: I send the new boot buyer to Alvies. That buyer wears tighter jeans and t-shirts.
Pros
- A Limited Lifetime Warranty that excludes sole and heel wear, covers the original owner and carries a $19.99 replacement fee
- A resolable 3/4 Goodyear welt
Watch out for
- Owner reports of narrow toe boxes, wrong sizes and defects, counted above
Skip it if price decides.
Best for modern Western style: Hevias The Heritage Boot
The Heritage Boot comes in Copper and Coal, both American bison, Goodyear welted and built to be resoled. Our Heritage Boot page says "Handcrafted in León, Mexico by generational artisans", a product-level line. See The Heritage Boot.
Copper is $385 today (price checked October 16, 2026), in sizes 8 to 13. The Hevias pages state no outsole, widths, heel height, shaft height or warranty.
George's take: I call Hevias modern Western.
Pros
- A product-level León line
- A resolable Goodyear welt in American bison
Watch out for
- Outsole, widths and warranty are not stated
Skip it if you need a stated width or outsole. Ariat's Bench Made bison styles list D and EE widths.
Shop the Hevias collection.
Best for teju lizard: Alvies The Congress
The Congress has a teju lizard vamp and counter, a 13-inch cowskin shaft, a 1.5-inch heel and a ¾ Goodyear welt. Among the Mexico-stating boots in our catalog, it is the only teju boot. See The Congress.
It costs $690 today (price checked October 16, 2026), in D and EE, sizes 8 to 15. Its León line comes from Alvies' own site, in its FAQ, and our Congress page is silent on where it is made.
One owner wrote of an Alvies teju pair that "it came with the skin flaking".
George's take: I see the Alvies wearer out at nightlife and festivals. The Congress is one of the exotics for a night out.
Pros
- A teju vamp on a resolable 3/4 Goodyear welt
- A Limited Lifetime Warranty that excludes sole and heel wear, covers the original owner and carries a $19.99 replacement fee
Watch out for
- One owner reports teju skin flaking on a pair
Skip it if you want a traditional cowboy boot. I call Alvies the way in for a new boot buyer, and not your honky-tonk boot.
For the leather itself, read our teju lizard boots guide.
Best documented hand build: Ariat Bench Made James
The James is an American alligator belly boot with an R toe, a 1.75-inch cowboy heel and a 12-inch shaft, in D and EE, sizes 7 to 14, built on a channeled Goodyear leather welt with an eleven-iron butyl leather sole, lemonwood pegged. Ariat lists it at $999.95 (price checked October 11, 2026).
Ariat's page says "Handcrafted by artisans in León, Mexico", and BootSpy writes that the whole Bench Made line is all handmade in Leon. Ariat's other 11 boots in our catalog name no country. The Bench Made line has eight boots in our catalog, every page names León, and seven are American bison styles.
Reddit lines on Bench Made run 20 positive, 3 negative and 1 mixed, and one BootSpy reviewer adds 4 positive lines. One owner wrote "The Bench Mades are a completely different level than the other Ariats". Owners in three separate Reddit threads say Bench Made still uses synthetic parts, two of them naming heel counters; Ariat's page, as we saved it, is silent on the claim.
George's take: To me, construction is the value of a boot. Read the welt and sole rows in the table.
Pros
- A channeled welt and a pegged sole, both on the page
- Free returns within 90 days
Watch out for
- At $999.95 it is the highest price in the picks table
- Owners in three Reddit threads claim synthetic parts
Skip it if price leads.
Best Guanajuato-stated alternative: Chisos No. 2
Chisos states "Handcrafted in Guanajuato, Mexico" on the No. 2's product page, not León, so it is the alternative for buyers who care about the wording. The No. 2 is an 11-inch boot with a refined square toe, hand-lasted on a leather channel welt, with a steel shank and a 1.625-inch heel, in D and EE, sizes 7 to 15. Chisos lists it at $595 (price checked October 11, 2026).
Chisos shows 4.9 on 841 reviews and says it fits true to size by Brannock measurement.
Chisos fit lines lean tight: 7 of 10 are negative. One reviewer on Chisos's site wrote "zero break in time, most comfy boots in my collection". An owner on Reddit's r/cowboyboots said "narrow square toe of the number twos" ran longer than expected.
George's take: I think a well-built boot, looked after, lasts a lifetime, and you can resole it as often as you like.
Pros
- Hand-lasted, on a veg-tanned leather sole
- Fully rebuildable and resolable
Watch out for
- A Guanajuato line, not León
- Fit lines lean tight, quoted above
Skip it if the word León matters to you.
Are Mexican-made cowboy boots good quality?
Quality follows the maker's build and materials more than the country on the label. One owner on Reddit's r/cowboyboots wrote "not all Made in Mexico boots are created equal". A BootSpy reviewer wrote "I don't think there's a difference in craftsmanship between American and Mexican-made cowboy boots".
Among the 57 León-stated boots in our catalog, a picked set and not the market, 50 list a construction and 49 name a Goodyear welt while Stetson names a double welt, 42 of the 48 that list an outsole say leather, and 37 of the 50 that list widths include an EE option.
Start with the construction column, then read the made-in line.
How we picked
Construction comes first, then the made-in wording and where it sits, then leather, widths and a dated price. Prices were checked October 11, 2026 (Alvies and Hevias October 16). Facts come from each maker's own pages saved that day; owner lines come from Reddit's r/cowboyboots, maker-page reviews and BootSpy.
Bespoke Western makes and sells Alvies, Hevias and Olsen-Stelzer boots. All 15 Alvies and Hevias boots in our catalog state León, and none shows a marked-down price today. George Baker is an Operating Partner at Rujo Boots. Rujo appears in the scoreboard as facts only.
Old Gringo has no construction or outsole in our catalog, so it earns no slot. For brand-wide shares, see the Cowboy Boot Index.
Quick answers
What is the best Mexican brand for cowboy boots?
It depends on the job. Take Tecovas for the most-reviewed boot, Soto for the lowest regular price, Alvies for teju lizard, Hevias for modern Western style and Ariat's Bench Made for a documented hand build.
How much do Mexican-made cowboy boots cost?
With prices checked October 11, 2026, and October 16, 2026 for Alvies, Hevias and one Old Gringo boot, prices among the 57 León-stated boots in our catalog ran from $119.95 for Soto's H4005, marked down from $179.95, to $1,995 for Tecovas The Marshall in crocodile, with a median of $375. 6 of the 57 show a marked-down price.
Are Cody James boots made in Mexico?
Cody James states no place on the pages we saved. One owner says "their boots are produced by manufacturers in León", which is an owner claim and not a maker statement.
Can you resole a Mexican-made cowboy boot?
Yes, when it is welted, whatever the country on the label. Hevias, Ariat and Chisos say their welted boots can be resoled or rebuilt, and Tecovas offers a resoling and restoration program. Alvies says its welted boots can be resoled but does not resole or reheel them.
Bottom line
Start with Tecovas The Cartwright, the most-reviewed León-stated cowhide boot in our catalog, and take Alvies The Lamar for a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects (original owner; sole and heel wear excluded; $19.99 replacement fee). Check whether the León line sits on the product page or only on a brand page. Prices were checked October 11, 2026 (Alvies and Hevias October 16), and the Soto pick shows a sale price.
