Boots by the ranch gate.

Yes, on the build it states. All 14 western boots we saved state a welt, and the maker's copy says each can be resoled. Lines about an older pair are almost all positive (11 of 12), but 22 of the 35 positive lines do not say how old the pair is, and only three lines describe a pair bought recently, too few to judge new boots.

We checked 15 Tony Lama models against Tony Lama's own pages and sorted 60 Reddit lines by the age of the pair. Prices were checked October 11, 2026. For the wider field, see the best cowboy boots and brands.

Are Tony Lama boots good? The short answer by line

  • Welted western boots, eleven models, $234.95 to $304.95 list: from the Wray to the Lenado. Nine list a leather outsole; the Antonio and the Bowie print Non-Leather.
  • Exotic leathers, $329.95 to $1,999.95: the Blaine ostrich ($329.95), the Carlos full quill ostrich ($609.95) and the Zamaro sueded alligator ($1,999.95), all three-quarter welts.
  • Work, $214.95: the Force's Details line says cement, with an oil- and slip-resisting rubber outsole.
  • Reddit lines that name a model: only the Segar (a pair worn almost 20 years) and the Lenado, of these 15, are named in a line we read, and both lines are positive.

A Not stated cell means the saved page is silent on that field; in the Regular price column it marks a single price.

Six pages print two labels for one detail. The Lenado's Details line says a Pointed toe and its description says a medium round toe. The Rowel's Details line says a Square toe and 3/4 Channel Welt with Single Row Stitch, its description a wide square toe, and its Features tab lists Double Stitch Welt.

The Bowie's and Antonio's Details lines say Full Welt, the Katie's says 3/4 Welt with Single Row Stitch, and the Force's says Cement with Double Row Stitch; each of their Features tabs also lists Double Stitch Welt. The table prints the Details line, and the Lenado's cell shows both toes.

Are old Tony Lama boots better than new ones?

Nine of the 60 lines say so: they set old Tony Lamas against today's and rate the old ones higher, 4 mixed and 5 negative. Lines about an older pair are 11 positive out of 12.

Pair age Lines Positive Mixed Negative
Older pair 12 11 0 1
Bought recently 3 2 0 1
Sets old against new 9 0 4 5
Age not stated 36 22 5 9
All lines 60 35 9 16

We call a pair older when its comment gives an era, such as vintage, pre-1990, a year or decades. A pair worn for 35 years is a survivor, so these lines show what lasted, not how many pairs did.

An owner on Reddit's r/cowboyboots wrote, "I still wear my 35 year old Tony Lamas daily". The one negative older-pair line is an early-2000s pair: "like a different company, literally; they just fell apart".

Only three lines say the pair was bought recently, too few to judge new boots. One owner wrote of a new pair, "Cadillac pair because they are comfy to the hilt". Another said "couple wears in don’t care for them" about a caiman pair. A third, in a thread whose title says "Just got these in today", wrote "My first pair of Tony Lama and man do they fit".

What happened to Tony Lama boots?

Six Reddit lines blame the Justin or Berkshire ownership, or the merger, for a drop in quality: 1 mixed and 5 negative. One reads, "Now, Justin owns the Tony Lama name, and the boots are low quality". These are commenters' claims, and each comes without a source.

Tony Lama's story page dates the company to 1911, and the Texas State Historical Association Handbook says it began operation in 1912. Tony Lama's page says Justin Industries purchased the company in August 1990, and the Handbook says the two merged that month.

What Reddit commenters praise

Durability draws the most praise, with 11 of 16 lines positive. Comfort is the most consistent: 6 of 7 comfort lines are positive.

A commenter who names Hyer and Tony Lama as favorites said they "lasted multiple seasons ranching in west texas". Another wrote that Tony Lamas "needed to be broken in but are now very comfortable".

What Reddit commenters complain about

Quality control is the largest theme, with 20 lines: 7 positive, 6 mixed and 7 negative, and the ownership claims sit here. Five of 16 durability lines are negative.

One commenter wrote, "the sole separated after about three months". Another owned a goat skin pair, and "the upper wore through!".

How are Tony Lama boots built?

All 14 western models state a welt: ten say three-quarter welt and four say full welt. The one work boot, the Force, states cement in its Details line.

Eleven list a leather outsole, the Carlos lists leather/TPU, the Antonio and the Bowie print Non-Leather, and the Force lists oil- and slip-resisting rubber. Tony Lama's copy carries 'with the ability to resole' on each welted model's page, which makes it the maker's claim.

Tony Lama's copy calls its three-quarter welt 'our most meticulous and sought after method' built with 'wood pegs and/or nails', and says a double stitch welt 'uses two rows of stitching for added durability'. These are brand claims.

One commenter says their Tony Lamas blew out the side and had a plastic counter. Tony Lama's saved pages are silent on counter material, so it stays a claim.

See our Goodyear welt guide for how welting works.

Where are Tony Lama boots made?

Tony Lama's Made in the USA page, headed Handcrafted in The USA With Global Parts, says its El Paso, TX factory is where many Tony Lama products are made. Five of the 15 product pages we saved say Proudly made in the USA with global parts and name the El Paso, Texas factory.

Product page says Models
Proudly made in the USA with global parts, El Paso, Texas factory Antonio, Avett, Bowie, Carlos, Segar
Not stated Wray, Lars, Jax, Rowel, Luciano, Lenado, Blaine, Katie, Zamaro, Force

A commenter on r/cowboyboots says some work lines are "made in China or have Chinese-made components", an unverified claim.

For the other brands, see where cowboy boots are made and American-made cowboy boots.

Do Tony Lama boots run big?

The lines point the other way: of 10 fit lines, 3 are negative, and each says to size up or calls the fit narrow. Zero of the 60 lines say they run big. One wrote, "I have to go a half size up". Tony Lama's 15 saved product pages carry no true-to-size statement.

Eleven models list EE and D; the Segar adds 4E and B, the Avett and Bowie add B, and the women's Katie comes in B only. The Katie runs 6 to 11 and skips 10½; the Segar, Antonio, Avett and Bowie run to 15.

The Wray and the Lars share the lowest list price among the welted western boots we saved, $234.95. The marked-down Bowie ($179.98) and Avett ($199.99) sell below $200 while the sales last.

Who should buy Tony Lama boots, and who should skip them

Pick Tony Lama if

  • You want a stated welt and a leather outsole at $234.95: the Wray or the Lars, ¾ welt with a double row stitch.
  • You wear a size 15 or a 4E: the Segar lists both, and the Antonio, Avett and Bowie list size 15.
  • You will break a pair in: 6 of 7 comfort lines are positive, and one commenter says theirs needed breaking in first.

Skip it if

  • You want the maker to say where the pair is made: ten of 15 pages are silent on place.
  • You are a woman who needs a width other than B: the Katie comes in B only.
  • You may need to return a sale pair: the Bowie in Oak prints Final Sale and No exchanges or returns (checked October 11, 2026). The Avett and Luciano pages we saved print no such wording.

How Tony Lama compares with what we make

We paired the Wray with Alvies The Shoal Creek: both are men's boots with a three-quarter welt. The Wray's page lists a Square toe; Alvies calls the Shoal Creek "our version of a square-toe boot", and its product page also lists a "Signature Wide Snip Toe". We paired the Katie with Alvies The Guadalupe: both are women's welted boots in width B only.

Tony Lama lists a leather outsole on both. Alvies' FAQ says "Our sole is made of 100% leather: outsole, midsole, and insole" and adds "A cork filler molds to your foot over time, and a layer of EVA helps make them the most comfortable boot you can wear."

Boot Price Regular price Made in Construction Shaft (in) Widths
Tony Lama Wray 11" Western $234.95 Not stated Not stated 3/4 Welt w/ Double Row Stitch 11 EE, D
Alvies The Shoal Creek $390 Not stated León, Mexico ¾ Goodyear welt 13 D, EE
Tony Lama Katie 11" Western $299.95 Not stated Not stated 3/4 Welt with Single Row Stitch 11 B
Alvies The Guadalupe $365 Not stated León, Mexico ¾ Goodyear welt 12.75 B

Tony Lama prices checked October 11, 2026; our prices checked October 16, 2026.

The Wray lists $234.95. The Shoal Creek is $390, so the Wray costs less, and its shaft is 11 inches against 13. The Shoal Creek is made in León, Mexico, and its sizes run 8 to 15 against the Wray's 7 to 14.

The Katie lists $299.95. The Guadalupe is $365, so the Katie costs less. Its sizes run 5 to 12, against the Katie's 6 to 11.

On returns, Tony Lama's terms give 30 days after delivery, and our refund policy gives full-price items 30 days from delivery.

For bison, the Avett 11" American Bison lists $264.95 ($199.99 marked down) with a full welt, against $385 (checked October 16, 2026) for Hevias The Heritage Boot in Copper American Bison, Goodyear welted and made in León. See bison leather boots.

How we counted

We went in this order: build, price, then Reddit lines by pair age. Tony Lama's facts come from its product, Made in the USA, Our Story and policy pages and the Texas State Historical Association Handbook, saved October 11, 2026. We take made-in wording from the product page itself.

The 60 lines come from 30 Reddit threads we read in October 2026, all on r/cowboyboots; 32 sit in seven threads titled about Tony Lama, and the other 28 come from 23 threads about boots in general. Tony Lama's men's western listing showed 78 boots, and we saved 13, so every count here covers the 15 models we saved. An owner is a commenter who says they own the pair.

To me, construction is the value of a boot: a well-built pair, looked after, lasts a lifetime, and a welted boot can be resoled as often as you like. Fit comes first, and I think a good pair settles in like a baseball glove.

Bespoke Western makes and sells Alvies, Hevias and Olsen-Stelzer boots, and the comparison above uses three of ours. The Cowboy Boot Index 2026 has the wider catalog.

Bottom line

Tony Lama is good on the build it states: a welt on all 14 western boots we saved, from $234.95 list. Lines about older pairs are almost all positive (11 of 12), and 22 of the 35 positive lines give no pair age. Only 3 lines describe a pair bought recently, so the sample for today's boots is thin.
